SMU

SMU lost today to Houston, a devastating loss. Maybe the AAC won't be getting those 5 bids we've heard so much about. :D

On Live-RPI, they have slipped to #53, sitting behind Providence. They now have 3 bad losses. No, 3 awful losses:

145 - Houston
176 - Temple
225 - South Florida

it's going to be interesting. Their RPI will be ahead of Xavier if they lose(along with PC if they lose to Seton Hall). They're going to be one of the more interesting teams. I'd kind of think with 4 top 50 wins, they'll be ok(not to mention either 2 or 3 top 25 wins depending on who wins tonight's game with Memphis and UConn). That's just something a lot of teams on the bubble can't compete with....

They are 4-6 versus the the top 100 with 1 road/neutral win. They are 19-3 101+. SMU's OOC SOS is like 300. Their 2nd best road/neutral win is road Wyoming like 120 and their 3rd is neutral Texas A&M 140.

Just for grins Dayton has more top 100 wins than SMU has played top 100 teams. Dayton is 10-6 versus 4-6 for SMU (and both are 4-5 versus top 50). Xavier is 8-8 top 100. Dayton and Xavier should be seeded way above SMU if SMU makes it. If the committee keeps preaching about playing a tough OOC, road/neutral wins, and top 100 games, SMU is last 4 in or out (and definitely behind Dayton/Xavier).

But you're ignoring the bad losses. They do matter. That's something a lot lf bubble teams can absolutely compete with. Then there's rheir 109 SOS, something with which other bubble teams can most definitely compete with very favorably.

SMU, Dayton, and Xavier all have 3 bad losses. I don't get SMU at all.

SMU is currently ranked in the top 25 and was expected to be a 8-10 seed, one close conference tournament loss is not going to drop them out of the tourney with a 23-9 record and wins against Top 25 teams.

I think things are a lot like what CBS has right now...
last 4 in-SMU, Providence, Tennessee, Missouri
1st 4 out is Arkansas, Minnesota, Cal, and BYU

the good thing for SMU is that only Minnesota still is playing of the 1st 4 out. If they lose to Wisconsin, those 1st 4 out aren't getting any more wins....

it's also good for PC as long as they beat Seton Hall. If they lose, they likely fall out and Arkansas or Minnesota moves up. If they win, Missouri falls out unless they beat Florida.

Just looked and the three bracketology things I follow have only Xavier, 'Nova, and Creighton in for the Big East, while SMU is a 9 or 11 seed.

BYU out? Wow!

I know they don't have a lot lf wins over the top 50 - only Gonzaga, Texas, and Stanford. But that's something and their RPI is 34, their SOS is 24. They also have 3 road/neutral wins over yhe2nd 50. That's abetter profile than some others who are supposedly getting in.

Where they are ranked in the human polls is irrelevant. When that close conference tournament loss comes to a team with an RPI of 145, then it can drop them out of the tourney. SMU has stumbled down the stretch, losing 3 straight to end the season. It will cost the. The only question is how much.
