Depaul & Xavier wins tonight = the league's worst nightmare

Postby senditinjerome » Thu Mar 13, 2014 5:39 pm

Picture this:

Semifinal game #1: Hall/Providence
Semifinal game #2: Depaul/Xavier

No traditional Big East powers - Nova, G-Town, Marquette
No local interest: St. John's
No national player of the year candidate - Creighton

So you are a fan of one of the teams that lost, I presume?

Look, no offense to these schools and their alum/fanbases. Upsets are what make March great. Kudos to Seton Hall and Depaul (last night) for not lying down.

But I'm sure this isn't how the league drew this up on paper. In their ideal scenario, they would have wanted 4 of the schools I mentioned in the semi finals. One school is likely and two is still possible.

I think the league wants Creighton and Xavier. Pretty much assures 4 bids.

If we are going with ideal circumstances, I would guess they'd want a Providence v DePaul final (after a Xavier v DePaul semi), with DePaul winning... that likely gives you 5 bids.

I don't think they're gonna complain about the drama of the first 4 games (decided by an average of 2.75 points) or the fact that the Big East Tournament in Madison Square Garden is the site of the biggest sports story of the day.

That scenario guarantees 3 bids though.

I count 5

Nova a creighton get the bids. Bubble team PC/X get in with the deep run and DePaul auto bid for winning.

Wouldn't the real worst case scenario be Seton Hall beating Providence in the Semi-Finals, Marquette beating Xavier, Creighton beating Depaul and then Creighton beating Marquette in the Semi-finals and then Seton Hall in the finals. That is only two bids locked.
