Opposing Fans Experience in Providence...? And Elsewhere?

Postby billyjack » Sun Feb 02, 2014 1:19 am

Mel Ott's (512 home runs, high leg kick) supportive comments in the other thread got me wondering...

So last week, all three new schools visited Providence and the Dunk. I was wondering what you thought of the city and state, people, hotels, restaurants, game experience... kind of the whole impression you guys got. Are we in the "majors"? Any surprises? Did you find the people nice here? Was the snow a pain (Butler fans in particular)? Looking forward to coming back next year? Ways to improve? Old BE foes can pipe in here too... looking forward to hearing your thoughts.

Actually, this could be done for all Big East traveling fans in other BE cities...

I love going to Providence. It is a great city with excellent Italian food. My family and I have been watching the Pirates in Providence for many years. The Dunk is great and fans are cordial.

Never watched a game there but it is a great little city to chill in.

Was at the dunk last season for SJU. we had a little section but thought the fans around us for the most part were cool. The city was OK. Hard to compare to NYC but we had fun and would definitely go back.

I went to an SJU game a couple of years back. I enjoyed Providence. Nice arena and the people are friendly. Went to a nice restaurant after the game. Downtown was rather quiet for a Saturday night.

Been to Nova. Wells Fargo upper deck sucks. Your looking straight down onto the court (same as Barclay's in brooklyn).

Been to Verizon Center several times. Nice pro arena. Great location. I love DC.

I like Prudential Center. Hated the RAC. Worst of the trips I've taken. Terrible parking lot. So dark and dangerous to walk through. A lawsuit waiting to happen. I went to a Uconn game in Hartford. I didn't like the arena but the fans were surprisingly cordial and friendly...unlike the ones who travel down to MSG.

I wanted to visit all of the old BE venues. I was dreading WVU but they left. Not sure I will still try to finish up with the new BE.

I've been to men's regular season college basketball games in 9 different stadiums, including 4 current Big East venues.

Marquette, UW-Milwaukee, DePaul, Notre Dame, Valparaiso, Saint Louis, Wisconsin, Butler, and St. John's (MSG).

The goal is to get to every gym in the Big East, probably with Xavier up next season. I'd love to catch a game at the Dunk though.

In my travels, by far, the most welcoming away fans were Butler fans. Good-natured, minimal shit-talking, and just a great venue to watch a game in because it is the opposite of a cookie-cutter arena.

The worst fans by far were Notre Dame. Aggressive, if uncreative trash-talkers. For a fanbase that likes to think of itself as having a lot of "class," the Joyce Center is the only stadium I've left having garbage thrown at me.
Al McGuire: "What is this?"
Waiter: "Mr. McGuire, that is a cull lobster. Sometimes when the lobsters are in the tank, they fight. This one lost a claw."
Al McGuire: "Well then take this one away and bring me the winner."

Man, I wish I could have gotten out to Omaha this year. I had a few friends go out for the Marquette-Creighton game, but I couldn't make it. All accounts were positive. Seems Creighton fans are an enthusiastic, but good-natured, bunch in general. The only college arenas I've been to are in Wisconsin (Bradley Center, Kohl Center, US Cellular Arena, Klotsche Center), so I can't really speak from personal experience.
This is my opinion. There are many like it, but this one is mine.
