Prediction - All Big East team

Postby admin » Thu Jan 23, 2014 1:49 pm

We're nearing the halfway point of the conference season so I suppose we can start to think about post-season awards. Technically, we need six players because the Player of the Year is separate from the first team. Assuming McDermott wins POY, who are the 5 most deserving players after him at this point? I think Cotton, Christon and Pinkston are near locks. The last two spots on the first team are wide open. Melvin, Dunham, Wragge, Arcidicono, Harrison, Smith-Rviera, Gibbs, Gardner, Batts, Edwin could all get support.

Hmm. Semaj is averaging nearly 22 points and shooting 64% from the floor in conference play...

1st Team:
Cotton
Christon
Smith-Rivera
Pinkston
Gardner*

The first four were easy to decide upon, but I was really tempted to include Wragge instead of Gardner. I see Gardner being a bigger contribution to his team, though, down the stretch than Wragge. And, McBuckets is POY. No question.

Yeah, I'm a Butler fan and there's no reason at all to have Dunham on the 1st team and Christon on the second. Dunham is averaging 18.7 ppg in conference play, but he's shooting 42.9% from 2 and 30.5% from 3 in conference. I think it would be a stretch to even have him on the second team at this point. Lots of guys may not have the pure scoring numbers, but are far more efficient and do some other things as well. This isn't completely Dunham's fault though as he's running into some of the same issues that plagued Semaj last year. There just aren't enough scoring options elsewhere so he's trying to do too much himself.

I looked at the entire year, not just the conference. Why limit yourself to six games for this conversation.

Picking between a Porsche and a Mercedes when comparing Dunham and Christon. On the Big East Conference Website, Dunham is 3rd is scoring at 18.3 ppg. Christon is 6th at 16.9. Christon is an NBA lottery pick this year, and Dunham isn't. Christon should have a better FG%, as he is significantly better at driving to the hoop than Dunham. Dunham shoots from the three and Christon doesn't nearly as much. Can't go wrong either way, but no way Dunham isn't on the 1st or 2nd team.

Really the same issue Cotton has as well. His shooting %s are down this year from three and overall, but he has to force a lot of things when the offense stalls. He shot at a better clip with Council running the point.

Same for Pinkston, yet you left him off both your 1st & 2nd team.
