Buzz, Mack among candidates for Texas basketball job by SI

Hopefully the Big East can retain top coaches long term but that is to be seen.

Top five candidates to become Texas’ next basketball coach
1. Buzz Williams, Marquette. All he’s done at Marquette is win. His strong Texas ties make him an obvious frontrunner.
2. Shaka Smart, VCU. He may get the call before Williams. Smart is happy at VCU, but could this be an opportunity that tempts him?
3. Mark Turgeon, Maryland. The Maryland job in the ACC is a whole lot different than the Maryland job in the Big Ten. Turgeon is a proven winner in the Big 12 from his time at Texas A&M.
4. Gregg Marshall, Wichita State. He would energize a program that’s gone stale. Marshall is the opposite of Rick Barnes in seemingly every way.
5. Chris Mack, Xavier. He has won big at Xavier, but Texas likely won’t have to go this far down its list.

Boooooo. If/When the Texas job opens up I think Shaka could be a great fit for them. He's done great things at VCU and turned down other job opportunities, but I don't see VCU as a staying power in basketball. And yes I am saying this because I would hate to see Buzz go, but Shaka is a great coach and I can't see him staying at VCU for his career.

I'll start bitching and moaning about Buzz the day he says he's leaving, not a minute before. Until the words come out of his mouth, he's our guy. No amount of postulating and espousing by the media matters (oh, and by the way, we spend more on basketball than Texas).

Fact Marquette has more history in BBall than Texas and spends more money on Marquette also plays in a tougher league overall (admittedly we don't have any programs like Kansas), we also are a BBall first school where Buzz doesn't have to take backseat to anyone else.

Texas is his and his wife's home state and that's it. But Buzz has young kids and they've lived here for the past 6 years, a lot of parents take that into consideration when moving to. I know it stopped my family even from moving from the city to suburbs when I was younger.

Surprised Pastner isn't on there.

I think it'll be one of Marshall, Shaka, Pastner, Buzz or Turgeon.

Buzz also takes his roll in the players lives so seriously that I cant imagine him leaving any of his players to someone else.

I want to agree with you but don't forget he did leave UNO for MU and I'm sure he left players there.

Wichita State just announced a couple of weeks ago that it was increasing Marshall's salary from $1 Million to $1.75 Million. I doubt he will leave. In the article below, he says he loves Wichita. Hopefully Buzz and Mack have the same opinion and don't want to leave either. I'm hoping they take the guy from Maryland (Turgeon). He coached at Texas A&M before moving to Maryland.

Yeah but over the past 3 years this has become more apart of who buzz is than it previously was. He talks about it all the time.

And hopefully he is more willing to stay now that he is the head at a major team. Other than home texas is a downgrade in every way. The thought still scares me though.
