OT- law advice

Postby Vill » Thu Jun 20, 2013 11:59 am

I think they are some lawyers here so pardon using the board for advice. I'm looking to make a simple will. Can I do that through a site like legal zoom or must I pay for services of a lawyer?

A will is something you can do yourself, but I highly discourage it, and I also discourage the use of legal zoom. There are many intricacies that are easy to overlook if you're not in regular practice of drafting wills, plus the laws vary from state to state. Each family is unique and there are no one-size-fits-all will templates.

Moser is 100% correct...

if your looking for a simple will on the cheap find a friend who is a lawyer in the state you live in... most attorneys do wills on the side especially for friends and a simple will shouldn't be that expensive.

Also attorneys can advise you of all your options... a website cannot do that... you may think you want a simple will right now but you might find out that you really need one or two clauses for your personal situation that might not be in the websites form...

I'm making a pretty good living off of people who do divorces through legal zoom and then ultimately a year later need a lawyer because they didn't account for property in the divorce, or now a bank is telling them that they don't have free and clear title to a piece of property. I'm sure Legal Zoom works for some people, but if anyone contests one of those prepared documents, they usually don't stand up too well in Court. I have no doubt, depending on your community of course, that you can get a will done for between $250-$750.
