It makes me wonder how much better the ratings would be if St Johns and Georgetown were leading the standings.

There would be a bump, no doubt. One of the best strengths of our current league is the prestige of our programs and our respective passionate fan bases. We are continuing to sell out MSG for the BET for the later games, and the opening games are definitely increasing in attendance as well. Our season home attendance, driven by our large arenas, is another great strength of our conference. Unfortunately, for other smaller and weaker conferences that have smaller fan support, smaller arenas and programs that simply cannot contend for a tournament appearance once per decade, this is just another example of selectively choosing facts that appear to close the substantial and wide gap between the have's and the have-not's.

Would not include Fox's sports channels or Fox News.

"The deal would trim 21st Century Fox's assets into a more focused slate of news and sports networks to better compete in a changing media landscape, the report said."
"An acquisition would exclude Fox News because Disney cannot own two broadcast networks, the report said. Fox's sports channels would also not be combined with ESPN to avoid antitrust scrutiny."

I would guess not much. The low ratings are function of network rather than league/teams. If those same games were still on ESPN, the ratings would be much more comparable to what they were in the old league. Simple fact of that matter is that people have been trained over the years to check ESPN first for sports - and that's exactly what the casual fan is going to do. The other big one for college basketball is CBS - its associated with college hoops because of the NCAA Tournament. As much as Fox/FS1 is trying to disrupt that, the network is still an afterthought to casual fans for college basketball (even big Fox). That's not to say in any way that our TV deal is a bad one. We got great value on it and the TV numbers will still improve. We simply chose a worthwhile payout with a young but growing network instead of an ESPN low-ball that would have generated better ratings.

This may not be correct, and don't know how to check.
But during the years of ESPN BE finals shown, there may not have been anything competitive to watch on other networks, or maybe only one other final going on.
During the BE finals from 2014 on, it seems to me there is another final (or 2) going on at the same time which would impact our ratings more than prior years.

Wait a second... Butler-Nova game had higher ratings over the weekend than any other college BB game including Duke-FSU and UK-GA? But I thought the BE didn't do well nationally because the alumni bases were not as large as the power FB schools? Even up against a major bowl, the Fiesta, where many viewers in the PA/Philly area had to choose between the most popular FB team: PSU, and most popular BB team: Nova, the game still seemed to do just fine.

Well it was on CBS not FS1, the name of this thread. Besides that fact, and the fact it was prime time, it's a good thing for our future contract with whomever decides to pick up the Big East. We still have a few years for the so-called "bottom" teams to get to the tourney and make some national noise. Once that happens you are going to have a 10-team behemoth representing the biggest and baddest markets in College Hoops.

That's huge.

And it bodes well for the days of streaming to come.
