If we go by statistical probability there are likely 120 teams left who have a shot at an at-large.

If we go by reality, the bottom 40 (at least) of them are out. So say they've got a statistical shot, fine. Split hairs if you like. Seton Hall could win out, win two games in the Garden, and then lose and still more likely be in than out.

Assuming that's what you meant by 'yes'.

I said "yes" to the idea that we should wait until the end of the season before deciding who the conference POY is.

No one is taking you lightly. The only thing we're dismissing is your bubble chances without a conference tourney win.

A conference tourney win would punch our ticket, not PUT us on the bubble. 20 wins, a .500 conference record and at least 1 signature win (Creighton or Nova) should put us in. Now, is it likely? Definitely not. But it's definitely not impossible. I understand a lot of you already had anti-New York bias before the season even started as made evident by some posters, but why can't you just give credit for the win without the whining about an attempted dunk at the end? If I did that you'd call sour grapes. I really like all the programs in this conference and I'm glad to be in it with everyone. I also really like the posters on here. There will be some tense moments and stupid things said we don't really mean, but that's life in the Big East where we beat each other up. So don't take anything personally…we were a cornered animal tonight and I think that's what you saw. I got home after halftime and how the hell did PC come back from a huge blowout at half? Nice comeback…also nice to see some nice shooting on both sides today.

I may have misunderstood. I thought you were talking about PC. Are you talking about St. John's?

Yes I was talking about St. Johns and their potential to get an at-large bid.

Lavinwood wrote:Pointer is kind of a bad apple…he got into a fight with Notre Dame last year. There was no reason for Pointer to dunk that, and there was no reason for DeRosiers to touch him. Anyway, who cares…this is not a morality battle, this is a basketball game. Am I allowed to point out the sour grapes of PC fans now, or is that only reserved for SJ fans? You puffed your chests out and ate humble pie. By the way Creighton and Nova fans, no one needs to leapfrog you to be on the bubble for the tourney. I really hope the Creighton and Nova fans jinx their teams by taking SJ lightly. It might already be happening. No one cares if you like our program. We go out there to win the game and tonight we did. I see lots of butthurt from other fan bases right now. If you want to get into a morality contest go talk about Seton Hall having a HS coach pimp out his own player. As much as people say there is an East Coast bias, there is an anti-New York hatred that has run rampant for years now permeating all sports. That's part of our charm. The 1986 Mets would curse you out, punch you in the face, but they won. Don't like it? Oh well.

I didn't take your original as referring to the bubble....

Lavinwood wrote:St. John's came out today and took care of business as they should have. Just got home…wow the 1st half we blew them out…that's exactly what I was waiting to see. No offense to PC you guys have a good team and Cooley will always keep you competitive, but SJ has too much talent to lose this game at this point in the season. Our doubters must now face the fact that we are going into a matchup vs. Creighton at home and winning that would shake up the conference and put us in the real conversation.

Great job by SJ winning. PC with the really stupid hard foul at the end there. You lost…let the whistle blow and end it. Really?

On to Creighton at MSG.

...I'd agree that they can get to the bubble, but they're going to have to likely beat both Creighton and Nova. 7-2 with loses to both would likely mean they have to win BET. They just don't have any quality wins without either.

Lavinwood - This is coming from a neutral party who doesn't have a dog in this fight. Your post at the end of the game was incredibly condescending and disrespectful towards PC. You know that's the case, but I'm sure you won't admit it. You are cocky as hell and you rub people the wrong way.

Also, YOU are the one who brought up the play at the end of the game. Your reasoning was irrational, people disagreed with it, and then you complained about people whining about the dunk. YOU brought it up in the first place! Your comparison of that play to an attempted steal at the end of a blowout is incredibly flawed. And the anti-NY bias stuff is silly. Nobody would care that you were an SJU fan if you were respectful to other fans/programs.

I guess no one cares about Butler / Marquette on this game thread?

Lavinwood just gets a bit too emotional after games. After some St John's losses, after reading some of his posts I thought he was going to jump out a window.

Butler with a 10 point lead over Marquette.

Let's not forget the DeRosiers not only fouled him hard when the game was already decided, but when Pointer went to walk away he grabbed Pointer's arm. DeRosiers was the aggressor. He's lucky the other players separated them because Pointer doesn't play around with that stuff. It was stupid plays by BOTH sides, not just SJ. SJ shouldn't have gone for a dunk, and PC shouldn't have picked a fight. I think that's totally fair. SJ has been seen as the bad guys for a while now and I know people root against us, even other Big East fans. If there's any team people should get behind, it's us for exposure and because when NYC is good in any high level basketball, it's great for the sport. Our success is also crucial to how the Big East will be perceived. We have the media hype machine over here and if we get headlines, it brings more exposure and hype for the entire conference. Even if we miss the tournament, we may have finally gelled and our core has 1 more season together. We don't lose any important pieces but we may not gain any either. I still give SJ a fighting chance against Nova or Creighton. We don't need both we need 1 of those wins to be in the conversation. After that we need to beat lower half teams and if that has us at .500 in conference and 20 wins with victories over the #36 RPI PC and a #12 Creighton/#6 Nova then I don't even think we need a BET win to get in. Winning a game or 2 would put us over the top.

And yes Burrito, I do get emotional after 6 games decided by 4 or less with half of those heartbreakers against ranked teams that could have us ranked right now if a few things went differently. I never mean anything personally or to attack any program. In other news, this is a good Butler/Marquette game.

Wow…I love this Mayo kid. What do you Marquette fans want for him? How about Lavin and a signed Mullin Team USA jersey? ;)
