I wouldn't think too much of it unless he's just desperate to leave Xavier. He's one of those guys that all major programs will give a call to see if he'd be interested, and then the media twists that into "going after" "offering", etc. I wouldn't be surprised if Missouri gives him a shout as well. Doesn't mean anything is coming of it. Same thing for Shaka Smart and Greg Marshall. If you're an AD and don't call these guys, your fans will wonder what the heck is wrong with you.

Mutual interest between VOLS and Xavier's Chris Mack, Cincinnati's Mick Cronin (Posted on 4/17/14 at 2:04 pm)

Multiple sources in Cincinnati and Knoxville have confirmed to govols247 that Xavier coach Chris Mack and Cincinnati coach Mick Cronin are interested in the opening at Tennessee.

Mack has been an assistant or head coach at Xavier for all but three years since 1999 and played at Xavier before that, and Cronin is a Cincinnati graduate who has been the Bearcats head coach since 2006, but multiple sources have confirmed that both coaches are interested in the Tennessee opening and "have their reasons" for that interest.

Mack is 111-57 in five seasons at Xavier and has made the NCAA Tournament in four of those seasons, advancing to the Sweet 16 in 2010 and 2012.

Cronin is 231-131 in eleven seasons as a head coach. He has spent the last eight at Cincinnati and has made six NCAA Tournaments as a head coach. He also advanced to the Sweet 16 in 2012.

Multiple sources have also confirmed to govols247 that Mack and Cronin would both be on or near the top tier of candidates on Tennessee's wish list. – 247 Sports

With Cuonzo Martin gone, who is next for Tennessee? - April 17, 2014

Cuonzo Martin’s surprising departure is in the past. Now, Tennessee has to find a new head coach.

The Tennessee men’s basketball program took a somewhat surprising blow this week when Cuonzo Martin accepted the head coaching job at Cal. Though he was never really accepted by Volunteers fans, Martin led Tennessee to the Sweet 16 in 2014 and to three consecutive winning seasons in the SEC.

Now, Tennessee has lost four of its top five scorers, either to graduation or the NBA, and is left without a coach.

With a near-empty cupboard and a souring reputation in Knoxville for head coaches, the search for Martin’s replacement will be tough. Gregg Marshall and Shaka Smart, the two most frequently named candidates for any vacancy, are long-shots at best. Here are some candidates who might be convinced to take a tough job:

Chris Mack (Xavier)

As a native Ohioan, it might take a lot to pry Mack from Xavier. But with four NCAA Tournament appearances in five seasons with the Musketeers, he might be worth whatever money it would take. Though he has a pretty good position right now, the Vols should be able to convince Mack that life in the SEC beats life in the new Big East. Mack likely already realizes that, considering his not-so-secret interest in the Cal job. Mack was the 2011 Atlantic 10 coach of the year and led the Musketeers to a third-place finish in their first Big East season.

Tad Boyle (Colorado)

Archie Miller (Dayton)

Doubt he'd go to Mizzou. Xavier's assistant coach Rick Carter left Columbia before this past season to come to X.

Since Norm Stewart left, Missouri has been a bad landing pad. First Quinn Synder almost ruined the program with his ego, then Mike Anderson was there for 3 with his street ball, then Haith, who could recruit but not coach. I'm not seeing Missouri as being a stable situation that an established coach would want to gamble his career on. Lots of bad stuff happening with athletes getting arrested left and right. One BB player was recently arrested twice in one day.

Doesn't sound like he's going anywhere. Cal, Tenn. or Mizzou:
