Of Course if we limit things to the Big East Era things look a little different:
Georgetown 1 National Title, 3 Title Game Appearances, 4 Final 4's, 8 Elite 8s, 11 Sweet 16s, 25 Tournament Appearances.
Villanova 1 National Title, 1 Title Game Appearance , 2 Final 4's, 6 Elite 8s, 8 Sweet 16s, 22 Tournament Appearances.
Marquette 0 Nation Titles, 0 Title Game Appearances, 1 Final 4, 2 Elite 8s, 5 Sweet 16s, 17 Tournament Apperances.

Oh sure just skew the data to take away the whole time MU was coached by our hall of fame coach. This is why I said being an MU fan is like being the little brother who's done pretty much everything the other two siblings have but still gets ignored. Why don't we look at our programs pre Big East era? I'll let you look at that.

1) More recent history is clearly more important. The NCAA tournament and Basketball in general were completely different back then. Marquette was a far better program than Georgetown between 1900-1979 good for you. Georgetown has been far better from 1980-2014. I think that's a little more relevant.

2) Even looking at all time data you can't ignore that Marquette has had the least success in terms of Regular season accomplishments which are far from meaningless. I know that Marquette didn't have a conference from 1980-1990, but seeing as you only made the NCAA tournament 3 of those years I think it's safe to assume they wouldn't have come close to catching up in terms of conference titles even if they had been in a conference.

Some of you Georgetown fans should have your mail delivered to the past, you spend so much time living there. But since you brought it up...

"Recent History" (Since 1999-2000...so almost 15 years worth of material)
Marquette: 1 Final Four, 2 Elite 8s, 4 Sweet 16s, 2 Conference Championships
Georgetown: 1 Final Four, 1 Elite 8, 3 Sweet 16s, 3 Conference Championships
Since 1990-91, Georgetown has missed the tournament 9 times. Since 1990-91, Marquette has missed the tournament (gasp) 9 times.

That hardly qualifies as "far better," but congrats on being awesome when Members Only jackets were in style and Timothy Dalton was James Bond.

Thats great but since 2000 both schools have been below average with 2 NCAA berths.Talking to some Johnnies fans you would think they are in a class of their own.

This I think will be SHU's top rivalry going forward. I love the fact that we have Whitehead and all top NY recruits coming next year. I know we are targeting Santos, Govan, Buie and other city guys next year, and I am sure St Johns is gunning for Briscoe and other Jersey guys. I hope we burst their NCAA bubble tonight at home (where they havent won since like 98). And if that is "bad" for the Big East so be it

It's not going to matter who you are bringing in next year, your coach still stinks and the locker room will continue to be fractured with no leadership from upper classman. Now you'll have to deal with your star player listening to his HS coach over your head coach. We'll have a team full of talented upper classman who already have shown signs of leadership. Even with all those big time recruits your coach is still on a very hot seat. He clearly can't coach or inspire his players.

BTW We will redeem ourselves in Newark tonight and continue our winning ways while you guys continue to be a disappointment. When we win it's good for the league, no one says the same about the Pirates.

Lol I was thinking the same thing, Hall2012. Also, it's funny to see a fan of a team coached by Steve Lavin disparage another BE team's coach.

I'd say this thread is helping things to warm up around here.

I also have to agree about Creighton: a truly classy program that should bring a lot to this conference over time.

Imagine if St. John's and SHU do really get going. It may not achieve the stature of the Big Five in Philly or Xavier/UC, but it would be a helluva rivalry in the country's largest city. Not bad.

We now return you to the sibling rivalry that is Georgetown, Nova and Marquette...

I also love how HoyaHooligan refers to 1980 as "recent." Perhaps relatively, but come on, man.

For perspective: A 22-year-old senior on a 1980 college basketball team could have fathered a son right after graduating who grew up to play college basketball, and if the son also fathered a son just after graduating, that 1980 player would be 56, and already have a grandson....who, at age 12, his grandson might already be on the early recruiting trail.

The guy who has a half dozen trips to the sweet 16 isn't a good coach? The guy is 10-1 during the first weekend and has only missed the tournament 3 times as a head coach and one of those seasons he was battling cancer and only had 6 scholarship players on his roster. Yeah he must be horrible! Whats your coaches record look like?

He recruits very well. In fact, I'd say he's one of the better recruiters in the country. Even if he's outcoached in a game, that talent disparity can often make up for it.

"We should have a banner up there, only coach team to make the tournament without a coach". And to talk about recruiting, isnt SJU the only Big East team to not sign anyone for this year? Its not like you are graduating 3 guys, all of your bigs beside Obepka

Haha I was thinking of that exact quote. This season is weird, because generally the one thing that Lavin is really good at is recruiting, but he has no commits yet for 2014.
