Xavier-Georgetown 1/15/2014 X History Game

Just checked the play-by-play. Markel Starks got a layup at 15:00 in the second half to extend the GT lead to 53-36. Xavier outscored them the rest of the way, 44-14! My counting of possessions could be a little off, but based off what I counted, Xavier scored 1.63 points per possession and held Georgetown to 0.32 points per possession in the last 15 minutes of the game. I know Georgetown had a short bench and were probably really tired by the end, but that's just insane.

I'm mostly happy that the Hoyas look so good with out two starters, but frustrated that the final score doesn't reflect the play on the court at all. Georgetown by 13 was much closer to the play on the court than Xavier by 13, but at least a 3-5 point win for Xavier would've been closer to the truth of what happened in the game rather than the 13 point final spread.

Oh well very confident going forward and positive we'll stomp all over Xavier in the return game.

Watched most of the game (in and out second half) and I am almost inclined to agree with you. Georgetown absolutely dominated the 1st half. Someone (its honestly a blur) X dominated the second half. I guess, live by the 3 die by the 3?

You guys got boatraced by 26 points in the second half. Ridiculous shooting from 3 gave you guys a nice cushion in the first half.

Georgetown is a 33% 3pt shooting team. They were shooting 75% early into the 2nd half. That caught up with them and they didn't do anything else on offense to make up for it. They dominated X in the first half, but X returned the favor and dominated in the 2nd half by outscoring Georgetown 44-14 over the last 15 minutes of the game.

I wouldn't count on Georgetown stomping all over Xavier in the rematch. It should be a solid game between two good teams, just as this game was. I'll be rooting for Georgetown until that rematch.

I just want to say that I really like watching Xavier play. That group never gives up and they have a fun style to watch.

Right back at you! I don't often watch teams other than X play, but after watching Creighton's last two games, I'm all in. I would love to see them get a great seed and make a nice run in the dance.

So Georgetown was up by 13 at the half. It was pretty impressive. The monitor said they were shooting close to 62% from three at the break. But then there is the second half, when Xavier dominated. 44-14 run is pretty impressive. The "better team" blew a 13 point lead and allowed a 44-14 run. When a team is better than another team, they are usually able to fight themselves out of adversity and find ways to come back in ball games. They don't allow 44-14 runs. We made most of that run without Semaj Christon who was sitting out with four fouls and came in with around 3:30 left. We already had the lead back by then. The "better team" battles through adversity and proves they are better. I think we know which team did that. So is Georgetown hands down the better team. I don't think you can say that after this game. We will find out next game I guess when Georgetown completely dominates us next time. Guess we better just give up now and not even try. Though as we all found out, when Georgetown was completely dominating us in the first half, it didn't exactly work out so well for them in the end.

I think Georgetown could surprise in this game. If we had our full complement I'd definitely be picking us, but I think people are underestimating Georgetown in this match up. I think people will be surprised at our ability to contain Stainbrook on the inside. I see him as a Harangody, Cooly from ND type of below the rim big that we always had great success against.

You were right. Georgetown did pull a "surprise" in the game, although not quite what I expected.

Georgetown offensive draughts are not uncommon. They scored like 4 points in the first 11 minutes at Providence a couple games ago. They need another scorer. Hopefully they let Smith start playing soon, but that probably won't happen. Reggie Cameron seems to be getting some confidence in his shot though.

Pretty simple. Georgetown shot lights out first half, then had no bench in the second. Look at the minutes and you'll see I'm right.

If Georgetown could keep up that stellar shooting and not get worn down, they might have won. But no. Their flaws are obvious, and X took advantage.
