Basketball marathons are here to stay...as well as summer announcements of them.ESPN announces full Tip-Off Marathon schedule for college hoops season:
There's no better way to kick off the college basketball season than a TV extravaganza of games spanning 24 hours. And, well, there's no better way to get fans excited in August than to announce those games. ESPN unveiled its College Hoops Tip-Off Marathon schedule on Monday, including 12 of USA TODAY Sports' preseason top 25 teams, including the Champions Classic, which pits Michigan State vs. Duke and Kansas vs. Kentucky.

That's apples to oranges. ESPN has done that marathon for at least 5 years, if not longer...
It's also NOT up against the College Football Semi-finals.....

It is pretty well documented that we are selling the "you get to be the man on campus because we dont have football." What a better say to show that then having a hoops marathon while the P5 is obsessed with football.

Don't think schools like Kansas, Duke, etc. have a problem with that....
It's the entire package. It's not good business to put up good games to go up against the most popular sport in the country's semi-finals. Those games are going to get better ratings than a lot of NFL games. They'll have at least 10 million If not closer to 15 million viewers per game. on NYE even.

Yeah, I gotta agree with you here. Both FS1 and the Big East should avoid going head-to-head against the CFP playoff games like the plague. It doesn't matter whether people here personally would watch the CFP playoff games or not - the fact of the matter is that everything going up against them would be crushed in the ratings just like if they were going up against NFL playoff games or the Oscars. You can already see this on New Year's Day, where all of the "counterprogramming" from other sports (i.e. the NHL Winter Classic) are on BEFORE the Rose Bowl starts. No one actually wants to go up head-to-head against the Rose Bowl itself because it's ratings suicide.
Now, that doesn't mean that the Big East should abandon New Year's Eve completely. It still has time for a doubleheader starting around 12 pm ET before the CFP playoff games start. That's what the Big Ten appears to be planning for its New Year's Eve basketball schedule. (For the past several years, the B1G would have 4 or 5 games on New Year's Eve, but it looks like it will cut it down to an earlier in the day doubleheader this year to avoid the prime time New Year's Eve bowl games.)

The beauty of the marathon wasn't that it was on New Years eve, but it was the season opening marathon. It's a GREAT idea. If it's on Dec 30, it's a home run- and we'd probably see games getting 200-250k viewers per game. Not struggling to get 100k.
