While Xavier's Chris Mack remains a candidate at California, multiple sources told CBSSports.com on Friday that former NBA coach Eric Musselman has interviewed with school officials on two different occasions about replacing Mike Montgomery as the Bears' men's basketball coach.

Hopefully, the Xavier brass ponied up with enough cash to keep Chris and his staff at XU for many years to come. It's not like he can't build a Final Four type program at Xavier now that the Muskies are in one of the top 6 Conferences in the Nation. The President, Board of Trustees, and AD simply have to give him and his staff the level of compensation commensurate with others at this level, especially considering that many coaching staffs who fail to produce at the level that Xavier has been performing have been paid substantially better.

I think it's interesting to note he is the highest paid Xavier coach ever according to the article. Perhaps Mack is just saying the right things for the press regarding how happy he is @ X, but it's encouraging he will at least see the highly touted class into X.

I fully expect him to leave in the future if he continues to have success. Speculation by some has him holding out for something bigger in the future.

That makes sense. Coaching salaries at the high major level, and all levels, have rapidly escalated over the past 3 or 4 seasons.

But he was still among the lowest paid coaches in the Big East. Hopefully, he leveraged Cal's interest in him to get an extension and higher pay for himself and his staff.
