Buzz Williams leaving Marquette for Va Tech

Buzz Williams left Marquette for a variety of reasons, sources told ESPN. One of the biggest was new league/new TV package.

this is probably almost all of it. FS1 is not a good thing for us right now.

No, this is the spin from ESPN... we get 5 boxes of ziti a year each... Va Tech is a doormat...
Crazy move, but Marquette is a great job and MU will have no trouble finding a great replacement.

I'm sorry, but a network where our title game got a 0.5 rating isn't good. I could see him thinking when I get VT good, 5 games on ESPN is better than 10+ games on FS1. With the avg ratings, it's hard to argue.

I think it's very possible the TV deal is tough for him. I mean, think about his competition. Wisconsin. How many times were they on ESPN? I'm counting 9. How many times was Marquette on ESPN? 2 or 3 times? That's a huge difference. I think a lot of you on here romanticize FS1, but fact is right now, it's not a plus. Big Ten gets on ESPN a ton. That is who he was competing with for recruits. In a way, doesn't matter about VT. If anything, that shows how desperate he was to get out of dodge.

Then stick it out at Marquette (where all those Top 100 recruits you just signed didn't seem to mind FS1) for another year or two, win in this supposedly inferior league and then go take a better job than Va Tech. He just fell off the face of the earth.

Do these lateral moves ever work out? I can't remember a coach leaving one prominent school for another and having similar success. Although, only ones that immediately come to mind is Bub Huggins and Frank Martin. Ugh, I guess Pitino and Cal.

Unfortunately, Buzz sees it as a step-up and not lateral. He of course will not say this in his presser, but you don't leave a top 3-4 program at a top conference for a bottom program at a top conference. So bunch of rumors will be he left because xyz, but he wants to compete versus Boeheim, Coach K, Roy Williams, etc.

I would see it as a demotion and simply do not understand. Going from one of the top programs in the Big East to a cellar dweller in the ACC. He is in a great situation now.

But a little worrisome for the Big East (not too worrisome, but a little). Before realignment, I really doubt this move would have happened.

Does anyone think that Buzz can have the recruiting success at VT as he did at MU? He had a hell of a class coming in and now he starts from scratch. We shall see.
