This. 1000 times this. I never understood complaints about "ugly basketball". To me, "ugly basketball" is losing 20 or 25 games per year like DePaul has been doing for the past several years. I don't care what style DePaul needs to play to win games - whether it's a reincarnation of the early-90s Knicks teams or the run-and-gun mid-2000s Suns teams, it doesn't matter as long as they win.

For what it's worth...

But those fans hankering for a change at the top can keep wishing. After the game, DePaul athletic director Jean Lenti Ponsetto told the Tribune that Purnell will return for the fifth season of a seven-year deal he signed in 2010.

"When he came here we talked about taking four or five years to get it turned and to get the caliber of student-athlete we want in the program," Lenti Ponsetto said. "It's definitely a rebuild, this process that we're in, and we're going to stay the course, recruit, just get better and execute."

There's some wiggle room in that statement, but yikes...

I really feel sorry for the DePaul fans to have an AD so incompetent. This is bad news for the league as well.

Translation: The administration won't give me the money to buy out his contract and spend on a hire who can improve on where we are, and there are no boosters of substance who care enough to pony up the money needed to buy him out and pay enought to lure someone who can come in here and make a difference, so we might as well go another year with what we have.

If we want the top teams in the league to finish with a 15-3 conference record, wer're going to need teams that finish with a 3-15 conference record. If the Depaul AD wants to continually volunteer for that role, bless her heart.

I agree, some teams need to get that guarantee win although I would prefer to see awesome games as oppose to blowouts. Also sucks if your a DePaul fan and you could get the same result than paying someone 2.2 million a year. I wish they would hire me, I'd take the HC job for six figures and have the exact same outcome. I'd be a better value.

This AD is single-handedly ruining DePaul's men's basketball program one season at a time. Forget about coaching decisions, here in Chicago, Northwestern and Loyola do a better job marketing basketball programs and trying to get people to games than this athletic department does. Heck, Chicago State has ads on numerous buses trying to get fans to come out. What does DePaul do?

But hey, if the Women's program is doing well, all must be fine and dandy then huh?

Al McGuire: "What is this?"
Waiter: "Mr. McGuire, that is a cull lobster. Sometimes when the lobsters are in the tank, they fight. This one lost a claw."
Al McGuire: "Well then take this one away and bring me the winner."

Wow, if he returns I'll be really surprised. Maybe they're just waiting to announce after the BE Tourney. Last night's performance was really weak. The effort and focus just wasn't there... I hadn't realized that they'd regressed so much... I can't see much change in performance next year if he is kept on... I now think Howland is necessary. Having a great team in Chicago would be fantastic.
