Conference TV Contracts and Revenue

The home for Big East hoops

The thing is if it did start over, very possible Dayton would be worth more and in a better situation. And a lot of the Big East schools would be far down the list. BUT- the fact of the matter is the Big East DID in fact start in '79 and was in the right place at the right time. Latched up with ESPN, a new comer, and the rest as they say is history. Sucks for Dayton, but that's just the reality of the situation.

lol, that was the vibe i got but it didn't make any sense. He throws an insult then does nothing to substantiate it. I read the lists, they were bad. Unlike Fieldhouse-bot I can actually formulate my own opinions.

This is a Big East board. Why have such a thread at all? Of course, our moderator has since created such a thread for some reason.

It is fun to point out that part of VD's revenue comes from an NCAAT revenue stream that was created by Xavier, which also means that it is a revenue stream that Xavier abandoned.

Poor Muddled Waters. He thinks he's put up some compelling link-fest, but he ends up facing a backlash. His fellow Dayton fans that lurk here must just shake their heads, wondering why he hasn't been banned here yet. VD's new coach had better keep them going to the NCAAT, or they'll start dropping out of such lists.

VD will continue to be the cat's meow in Dayton, Ohio, where the sweater vests will show up to watch a stellar home OOC schedule and weak A10 competition in a building that is closing in on the age of 50 - and looks the part.

As far as the Big East teams are concerned, the Forbes list rankings will be interesting to watch as we move forward, given the number of teams we're getting into the tournament, how deeply we're making runs in it, and given the continuing denominator of 10. The NCAAT revenue flow should continue to be impressive.

# of teams isn't the total thing at all to decide the tourney units. I mean, 2016 BE got 12 units with 5 teams and 2017 BE got 13 units with 7 teams. 2015 BE got 11 units with 6 teams. 2016 better than 2015, despite having 1 fewer team.

Or look at the Pac 12...
15 12 units with 4 teams
16 11 units with 7 teams
17 14 units with 4 teams

But people here would say that P12 2016 season was better than 2017 just because 3 more teams got into the tourney. Give me 2017 any day of the week P12 over 2016.

Why be so dismissive? This is a Big East board, and many of us are interested in discussing the more esoteric aspects of the conference (value, branding, expansion) and college hoops relative to the in-season stuff about who's doing well, what injuries are there, etc. It is the off season after all. I think these numbers are interesting. Would they have an effect on the decision-makers as to what school(s) might get an invitation (should invites be extended)? I don't know, but a major component of our conference's 'brand' value is the value of individual institutions, however that may be defined. Don't get so ruffled that UD has a higher value than X. So what? You got the invite four years ago and they didn't. And you just made the elite 8. But that fact doesn't change the outcome of either of the WSJ and Forbes analyses of what programs are worth the most. And it shouldn't be surprising that conference schools that are in large metro areas are measured to have high value even when the programs haven't been the best. Geez, the Clippers went for what, $2B when Sterling got kicked out of the NBA for being racist? When had they really contended prior to that (or since)? But they were in LA. Bada bing, bada boom. Value.

This isn't about lurking or trolling. It's the off season. Isn't now the time to discuss more random concepts such as this? Don't read threads if you think the posters are trolls or if you don't care about the direction of the discussion. For all of the "this is the Big East, so act like you're part of the big time" posts that fly around this board when any potential expansion candidate is mentioned, these whiny comments don't appear to come from a position of strength. If you truly have to take offense any time a UC or UD fan posts something, maybe you should schedule an hour on SJHooper's couch and talk about your feelings.

Ha!

Well, perhaps you and Muddy Waters should schedule an hour together. You could finish up with a cigarette over a discussion of your random concepts.

I could care less that UD is ranked higher than Xavier in these rankings at this point. I believe the professor's rankings are poorly thought out, and Xavier has been on the Forbes list comfortably for years. Beyond these rankings, I can assure you that I'm perfectly comfortable with Xavier's position in all of this anyway.

It's not about the subject matter. It's about having fun with a poster who is spending way too much time on this board and who otherwise has managed to get himself banned by two other message boards. Other posters are taking shots at him, too.

And for good and obvious (except to you) reasons.

The C7 had the opportunity to add five and go to twelve in 2013. They didn't because they saw more value with the institutional and geographical fits, as well as the round-robin format, so they chose to be a ten-team conference. Adding Dayton and VCU alone is not worth the separation of our conference's goals. If/when Saint Louis gets back to the top of the A-10 with Ford, then expansion becomes realistic again with SLU/UD, but there are no other realistic options out there. We aren't adding VCU. We aren't adding UMass. We probably aren't adding UConn. I would even make the argument that we aren't adding Dayton after Archie left, unless Grant shows that he is capable of not only continuing that level of success, but building on and elevating it as well.

One of our biggest strengths we have as a conference is our brand and identity. The round robin format is now part of that reestablished identity. Until a valuable and worthy program reveals itself to discard that asset, we are at ten for the foreseeable future.

Do you have a link to support that? I've never read a conference. Representative say that. Maybe that means that I'm just not well read enough on the subject, so I'm open to being educated.

If the brand identity is a major asset, why aren't the ratings higher? Why is Val talking about "growing the brand" if it's identity is already established as "our biggest strength"?

Dave Gavitt had a plan when he established this conference. In the days before college basketball on cable TV was well established, his plan was built around big arenas. That's why Seton Hall and UConn were invited at a time when they were not major powers. Within a decade both had made it to the Elite 8 and beyond, both became major powers. Without commenting on any of your examples, I'll just say that sometimes it's worth looking beyond the immediate status of a program.
