Although I am sure everybody is already watching, game is 67-67 with 2 minutes to go for Depaul to finish the opening night sweep.

DePaul survives winning by 1 point. Garret hits a 3 w/6 seconds left for the game winner. When is Purnell getting fired?

Bullet dodged. Wide open look for UIC, missed. Dozens of fans go home happy.

In the parts of the game that I watched...

- DePaul came out aggressively on defense, swarming everywhere and playing with confidence.
- Early on, DePaul did a great job of hammering it in low on offense for layups.
- Eventually they got undisciplined, got away from what was working, and started taking brainless off-balance 18-footers, often with 20 seconds remaining on the shot clock.
- Myke Henry made some poor decisions (see comment on off-balance 18-footers) and had a difficult attitude and lazy defense. This included allowing a key offensive rebound for a putback with under a minute, giving UIC their first lead of the game (edit... this shot may have tied it at 69 with about a minute left... UIC i think took the lead on an off-balance 20-footer making it 71-69).
- DePaul showed a lack of protecting the ball and a lack of valuing every possession... careless and distracted.
- Purnell I guess can't teach how to handle a zone defense. UIC sat in a zone for at least the last 5 minutes.
- The only guy or guys I trust on DePaul are Garrett Jr (by far the most reliable player), Curington (who seems to have a good hoops IQ), and Hamilton IV to a lesser degree. Wood played some focused defense too.
- Not having Melvin and Young i think is a net positive. Poor decision makers with difficult attitudes. With them gone, and McKinney booted, the only guys on the team who have their heads in the clouds are Crockett and Myke Henry (though small sample size with Henry).
- The game started out great. 6-1 DePaul early. UIC tied it at 6. Then DePaul had various leads of 20-11, 27-13, 40-21. DPU started bad from 3 (maybe 0-6), but then bigman Forrest Robinson hit a couple of 3's in late first half. They could have put them away, but the team as a whole started getting distracted and wasting possessions. It was still maybe 59-47 or so with 8 minutes left. Then the UIC zone worked its magic.
- At this point i'm just relieved that DePaul got the "W". I just hope tomorrow night that PC doesn't give us all agita vs Albany.

Here are the DePaul highlights. Garrett's game winning three pointer is at about 1:10.

As far as my team goes, Xavier was as represented. Young, but deep. All 11 schollies played and scored. Going to be an interesting year. Now go DEPAUL to make it a clean sweep !

Kid named Price on Lehigh couldn't miss.
Also, even though there was a giant "V" at midcourt, the game was played in Allentown, near Lehigh.
Man, I was getting nervous when it was 48-42.

Was at the game. Def not Nova's best effort. Too many 3's, too many misses, and Lehigh got confidence as the game wore on. They got lots of open looks and just didn't hit them. Defense looked much better than O. If this is one of our OOC hiccups, glad it came against a team that we could still beat playing poorly. Team just seemed to lack energy throughout.

Was considered a "home" game although it was an hour from Nova and 5 mins from Lehigh.
Go Nova!

True but am concerned with 2-16 from three and the many open looks we gave NJIT shooters. Without two of their starters, they were worse then an awful team. Saw Minnesota vs Louisville. Johnnies are going to have their hands full with their bigs and as always, coaching. Other sites are calling that game a given, win with a surprise win against Gonzaga who many believe that Mark Few has his best team ever. I think we may play Gonzaga but Obekpa and Pointer will have to turn into Super man 1 and 2 and Jones will have to get more then 2 rebounds if we are to beat Minnesota.
