1 thing I'll say- I'm not all that enamored by the move- but one important part of this is the fact that Mullin did play with the Pacers for 3 years so he will have some name rec even in newer parts of the Big East that weren't around before. He played there 97-2000- so while the kids wouldn't remember it, the parents living in Indiana surely would.

Name recognition won't be a problem at all and everyone should stop talking like it will be. While random kids may not know who Chris Mullin is, virtually every high school basketball player does. We're not talking about Jerry West, we're talking about someone who played in the NBA in the 90's and with great success. St. John's will be just fine in that aspect.

Here is Jay Wright's take on the hire. By the way, Jay shot down Texas very quick....

Funny how all I hear is how kids don't know him and all I see on twitter are top recruits praising the Mullin hire and acting like little girls around their favorite boy band when he calls them.

The perception that he is not known to kids was put to bed and tucked in days ago.

ESPN reported that McDonald's All American game MVP Chuck Diallo was asked about his interest in St. John's in light of the Mullin hire. He responded, "I don't know who he is, so I don't want to talk about him."

The new ESPN site is a mess, so I'm sorry that I don't have the time to deal with it to link the article.

Before the Mullin skeptics feed on the carcass, just know that Diallo is from Africa. So this should not be surprising.

"One of his options is St. John's, but the 6-foot-9, 230-pound forward said he didn't know new coach Chris Mullin.

"I really don't know him, so I don't want to talk about him," Diallo said."

Ouch. :?

But I think he means he doesn't have a relationship with him yet, not that he doesn't know he was a professional basketball player. I hope at least.

I heard a few good things from Mullin yesterday

1. He wants own New York City and will be at all the gyms and schools
2. He is going to focus on fundamentals and let his kids play
3. They are going to be the fittest team in the conference

He also said he wants to talk to Mullin first before he comments about him so I wouldn't worry too much yet.
