How Much Will IU Have To Pay Its Next Basketball Coach? - Mike Pudlow, IndianaHQ.com - March 16, 2021

Four coaches are scheduled to make over $5 million this year.

The highest-paid coach in college basketball is University of Kentucky’s John Calipari at a base payment of $8 million this season.

Calipari is followed by Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski. According to USA Today, Coach K is set to make slightly over $7 million this season.

Villanova’s Jay Wright is third, making $6.14 million this season.

Texas Tech’s Chris Beard is fourth at $5.05 million per year.

Tennessee’s Rick Barnes rounds out the top five at $4.95 million per year.

I was quite pleased to read that Jay Wright is the third-best-paid head coach in college basketball at $6.14 million per year. I’ll take that to mean that Jay Wright will conclude his very impressive coaching career at Villanova at a time of his choosing.

If North Carolina was paying Roy Williams less than $5 million per year, it is highly unlikely the Tar Heels will stump up the $9 million or $10 million per year it would take for Jay Wright to even consider leaving Villanova - the next blueblood in college basketball.

UNC job seems to me like one that stays in the family. Beard is a great hire for Texas.
