I know we're all trying to pump up our league here but if you were looking at it objectively this result shouldn't have been surprising. I have great hope for the future of this league but this year the Big East was just not very good and tonight was symbolic of that.
The game was a 4 to 8 point game most of the way. When X started gambling to make up points in the last 6 minutes, the margin got wider. Warren was great and hit some tough shots. NC State has Lewis and Vanderberg, plus the 500 lb guy, who were useless on offense. I'm not going to break down XU's gameplan right now cuz I don't want to irritate XU fans and the rest of us right now, but they needed to play more aggressively and show some muscle and give some hard fouls... there were a number of fast break layups that were uncontested with a Muskie just conceding the 2 points, but which needed and required hard fouls to make NC State get a little bit of fear, plus make them earn points from the line. Just my 2 cents.

Overall it wasn't that we lost last night, it was how we lost. Just too many stupid and lazy mistakes and then we just seemed to mail it in down the stretch. Two things that are obviously not acceptable in an NCAA Tourney game.

Didn't happen; they were lackluster at best. While Stainbrook labored down the court he was a man amongst boys once in the paint. Scored at will. Think his ankle was okay just out of shape, easy to do when you are big and don't practice as before. Was surprised with Lewis ability to just roam all over the court at will. Defense was not sharp at all, perhaps in spurts but overall effort was lacking. Didn't seem to me the crowd had any affect on the game. Both schools had their bands, students and fans sounding pretty equal. If the locals were rooting against Xavier they were not all that loud.
Again I will say it Xavier should have had a chip on their shoulder for being selected to the 1st round playin game and at Dayton to boot. Not sure my SLU friends are happy though as NC State looked better than we expected.
