The Associated Press (AP) is an American non-profit news agency headquartered in New York City. Founded in 1846, it operates as a cooperative, unincorporated association. Its members are U.S. newspapers and broadcasters. AP news reports, distributed to its members and customers, are produced in English, Spanish, and Arabic. The AP has earned 54 Pulitzer Prizes, including 32 for photography, since the award was established in 1917.

AP Sports Polls

The AP conducts polls for numerous college sports in the United States. The AP college football rankings were created in 1936, and began including the top 25 teams in 1989.

The AP college basketball poll has been used as a guide for which teams deserve national attention. The poll first began its poll of college basketball teams in 1949, and has since conducted over 1,100 polls. The college basketball poll started with 20 teams and was reduced to 10 during the 1960-61 college basketball season. It returned to 20 teams in 1968-69 and expanded to 25 beginning in 1989–90. The final AP Poll for each season is released prior to the conclusion of the NCAA tournament, so all data includes regular season games only.

Kudos to Django for finding and posting the syracuse.com link in Post #1. I had not previously seen an AP Poll listing in which explicit ranking numbers were assigned to teams ranked #26 through #41. I’m reposting last Monday’s seven subjective tiers (for easy comparison), followed by the similar tiers created by observing gaps in the total points received by teams in the AP Poll published this morning.

Hate to burst your bubble, but I'm pretty sure those are last year's conference NET rankings. If you click on NET on WarrenNolan, he has current records with last year's NET. Butler is 19 with a 2-3 record. This year's NETs haven't started yet.

The NCAA has not yet published their first iteration of the NET Rankings for the 2020-21 season, nor have they announced a release date for the first iteration of the 2020-21 NET Rankings, as I explained in a post which I later deleted, as it appeared to be objectionable to some posters. It was not my intention to cause offense, so I deleted the post. However this much of it is relevant to the post above:

5. EXPLANATORY NOTE CONCERNING THE NET RANKINGS 2020-21

The first iteration of the Net Rankings 2018-19 were published on November 26, 2018, and the first iteration of the Net Rankings 2019-20 were published on December 16, 2019. The NCAA has not yet informed us of the date that the first iteration of the Net Rankings 2020-21 will be released, and they may not have decided themselves, due to the extraordinary number of college basketball games that have already been cancelled due to the virus. The NCAA has already learned that the fewer the games played when the first iteration is published, the greater the anomalies in the NET Rankings (and the greater the bad publicity attached thereto).

However, the four Net Rankings 2020-21 webpages I checked are already up and running, and awaiting the first iteration of the Net Rankings 2020-21 to be published.

1. On Warren Nolan’s Team NET Rankings 2020-21 webpage, each team is listed in the same order as his 2019-20 webpage, but with the current won-loss records for each team for the 2020-21 season, which are updated daily.

2. On Warren Nolan’s [b]Conference NET Rankings 2020-21 webpage, each conference is listed in the same order as his 2019-20 webpage, but with the current won-loss records for each conference for the 2020-21 season, which are updated daily.[/b]

3. The NCAA’s official NET Rankings webpage still shows the final NET Rankings and won-loss records for the 2019-20 season, which presumably will be deleted and replaced with current data for the 2020-21 season as soon as the NCAA’s first iteration of the 2020-21 season is published.

4. On CBS Sports’ NET Rankings 2020-21 webpage, each team is listed in the order of their final 2019-20 rankings, along with their final 2019-20 won-loss records. The ‘Next Game’ column on the CBS Sports webpage shows the current next game for the 2020-21 season, which is updated after each team plays their ‘next game’.

I suspect that the very large number of cancelled games, and the unevenness of cancelled games among teams in a given conference, is causing havoc with the results of the new but secret NET Rankings formula. Kentucky and other teams will be lobbying the NCAA to abolish the NET Rankings for the 2020-21 season altogether, and ‘just give the at-large invitations to the teams who are usually in the NCAA Tournament’ and sentiments to that effect. It goes without saying that teams outside the Power 6 conferences should not be able to steal bids or otherwise benefit from the virus-related game cancellations.
