Yes he would have. It isn't like he left for Iowa, BC, or some other so-so job. Indiana. Even with them having been off lately, that's still in a tier with Kansas, UNC, UCLA; I'd love it for a Big East team to be mentioned in that crew, but it will take a few more NC banners to get into that discussion.

And stop ranting on about Wichita. The Big East would never have opened the public door for them, and never should. UConn? Probably, if the football problem was taken care of. VCU? Maybe; from what I hear, they're at least a pretty good school in a desirable area. Wichita? Hell no. Never was a good idea, never would be a good idea. They're a fit for the AAC, not the Big East.

If the Flyers were in the BEAST, they almost certainly could not have kept Archie.

Correct on both accounts.

I wouldn't be as certain about that as you are.

As I understand it IU was one of Archie's 3-4 "No questions asked" schools. That is to say, if they came calling UD wouldn't even ask for a contract buyout. That sends a pretty strong signal that he wanted to be there no matter what conference UD was playing in.

Dayton arguably just had their best 4 year stretch in school history. Lets see how the next 4 go without Archie.

just looking-
2014- Dayton 3rd best
2015- Dayton 5th best(just ahead of Butler)
2016- Dayton 4th best
2017- Dayton 5th best

so even though on average Dayton would be 3rd best, yearly they were more like 4th or more often 5th. And that's taking it just raw. have no clue how Dayton would compete in the Big East-only 2 games vs Big East teams in that period. Dayton was only 5-7 vs ranked teams last 4 years. That number of top 25 games is literally half of any big east school in those 4 years. Next closest one to Dayton would be Creighton and Seton Hall- both with 24 games vs top 25 opponents.

Wrong, and by a big margin. Previously posted:

UD won more games than any other school in both the 1950’s and 1960’s.

UD won 435 games between 1950 and 1969 and ranks among the top teams of the 1950s and 1960s in Division I history. The Flyers' .763 (228-71) winning percentage in the 1950s ranks fifth in the decade. Their .729 (207-77) winning percentage ranks eighth in the 1960s.

The ESPN/Sagarin All-Time Rankings
The Top 40 Programs of Each Decade

The 1950's:

7. Dayton
29. St. John’s
34. Xavier
37. DePaul

The 1960's:
7. Dayton
10. Villanova
17. St. John’s
19. Providence

Averaging a # 7 national ranking for 20 consecutive years is a feat that no other Catholic university has ever accomplished.

What a (stupid) pointless thread about a average program with a die hard fan base thats NOT IN THE BIG EAST (nor will they be). This is a BIG EAST board right? Who cares what dayton or VCU or whoever not in the BIG EAST thinks or what scenario may have happened had they been in the BIG EAST. We already know that they want in. All this extra garbage is wasted space.

ALL those fans of programs wanting their team to be in the BIG EAST are going to have to accept...

They haven't cracked the top 40 before or since. Such a strange situation.

These threads are tiresome, but that's a cool listing. How have I never seen it before? Having Dayton, UC, Ohio State, and Kentucky all in the top ten in the 60's is incredible. Surprising that X had a better 50's than 90's. I guess it's relative. We won the NIT in '58, but only made 3 appearances and had no NCAA appearances either. .560 win percentage. Pete and Skip's 90's teams made 6 NCAA's (1 SS), 3 NIT's (1 3rd place), and won a little over 70% of their games. Even the 80's were seemingly a better decade for us by most metrics.

Anyone can use numbers to justify themselves. I bet there are historical numbers out there that shows all of our teams in the top 10 in something. Dayton had an OK 4 years, great. Go do it for 20. That's how Butler got the invite.
