I'd like to get a Nova fan's perspective, but there could be something brewing between Villanova and Seton Hall if the Pirates can maintain their success from this season. I think Seton Hall would need to end its now 14 game losing streak at the Pavilion for anything to really take off, but they have had some eventful games recently.

Some points:

-Last 4 meetings away from Pavilion decided by 2pts or less (3 straight by 1)
-6 of last 7 away from Pavilion decided by 3 or less or in OT
-Josh Hart trip/stomp on Angel Delgado
-Sterling Gibbs punch on Ryan Arcidiacono
-SHU only team to beat Nova in all 3 years of NBE
-SHU 1 of 2 teams with multiple wins over Nova in NBE
-Met in 2 BET games that went to the buzzer, including 2016 Championship

Again, not there yet- especially with Villanova's continued dominance at home, but if the Pirates can continue to be a thorn in the Cats' side (and maybe steal another trophy from them), it may not be far off.

X is pretty chippy, so we get a lot of teams wanting to beat us.

The Butler rivalry is awesome, and not just because we have dominated it since the NBE.

Well Creighton is 4-3 against Xavier since joining the Big East so I wouldn't say they're unworthy

SJU/Seton Hall has been amped up since the relaunch of the Big East. SJU and X has been chippy and before this year was split 2-2. The games against GTown aren't that contentious anymore.

If I had to list 1-9 the teams we seem to not like from  to

1. Hall
2. X
3. Nova
4. Providence
5. Criehgton
6. Butler
7. Marquette
8. GTown
9. DePaul

Yeah, SJU-Hall has always been there to an extent simply due to proximity, but it got stale with the lack of meaningful games between the two in the old league. Now with the fresh start, both teams have basically been able to hit the reset button and feel like they can compete at the top of the league. They still haven't both been really good at the same time yet, but that doesn't appear far off and it's gonna be fun when it happens.

I'll add it also helps the rivalry (from Seton Hall's end at least) that with conference realignment relegating Rutgers from "conference opponent/top rival" to "non-conference cupcake/RPI anchor," many Hall fans now view St. John's as our top rival.

Nova v. Xavier is turning into a good one.

We need Georgetown to get good again so they can renew the Villanova rivalry. That Georgetown fanbase, unfortunately, is just as down as the team itself. How many goergetown fans do we even have on this board (besides the AAC fan pretending to be a georgetown fan?)

If St. John's can get its act together in the same years that Seton Hall is good, then that is a good rivalry. Both have been down for so long though that they will need some prolonged success to keep it up.

Butler fans seem extremely feisty and aggressive on their home board. Very chippy towards opposing fans. But they haven't really developed any particular team for a rivalry.

I can't see Creighton really being a heated rival of anybody. Fans are too nice.

Re: Nova v. Seton Hall

Nice local rivalry as SHU is holding their own, but I think most Nova fans view it as a should win game and get disappointed with the team if we lose (I am not of that mindset). Thing is, most Nova fans would like to see SHU pick it up and become a competitive opponent for Nova, so that's not really the foundation of an impending rivalry. Same with Providence. More like respected peers should they play competitive games. St. John's fans are much more delusional and obnoxious, so they have a better chance of being a heated rivals as the St. John's fans are crazy like Rutgers fans. But the chance of St. John's ever competing with Nova in the next half decade are extremely slim.

If SHU can make a tourney run, but just as importantly rebuild quickly after that and have another tourney caliber team follow that up, then we can re-assess.

Nova's rivalries tend to be Georgetown (although their fans are like ghosts these days), and then Saint Joseph's (PA) and Temple are big. UConn was a big one for a while (for some reason we seemed to interact more with them than say Syracuse or Pitt). Never really had anything with Notre Dame and the Louisville back and forth was always pretty friendly. Was a period when WVU fans and Nova fans would go at it too, but that seems like ages ago.

I also don't subscribe to the thought that if your teams play a couple of close games against each other then you are suddenly heated rivals.

It requires much more. Pre-game hype. Animosity of some degree (and real animosity, not fabricated). One team feeling slighted (maybe a win on a bad call, or a player getting hurt in a big game). Fans legitimately thinking they are the more desirable team, and both sides of the aisle holding this belief.

Nova has played Providence in some good games recently. But that hasn't really planted the seeds for a real rivalry yet. When PC beat Nova this year it was more of a cap tip reaction to Bentil and Dunn playing outstanding games and Nova fans thinking our team had to hit the gym a bit more. Not some dreaded reaction that caused a melt down.

Nova v. Xavier is moving in the right direction though. A meeting in next year's Final Four could go a long way. Especially with Chris Mack sort of taking the most hated coach role and Jay as the most lovable coach (see what I did there?)

Now that it's mentioned, when's the last time St John's and Georgetown have played a close game? Every time they play each other nowadays one team just rolls over the other. Like from my memory i don't remember a close GT/SJU game in the last 5 years.

As for rivalry, for me personally it is Xavier. I root hard for Xavier and like their team, but when they play us, it gets chippy and I find myself cursing out Reynolds and Blueitt. Reynolds trying to pick a fight with Yakwe, a kid who should've been a senior in high school at the time, just because Yakwe swatted a Reynolds shot attempt pissed me off. And another reason I say Xavier is unlike Georgetown, the games have been close as hell. SJU/Xavier 2 years ago was crazy, SJU won both in close games. This year, even though we sucked, both games were very close against Xavier
