Here's a few quotes by and regarding Isaiah Whitehead that I'm very happy to see:
Kevin Willard on Isaiah Whitehead:
“I love the fact that he can play multiple positions,” Willard said. “I love the fact that he doesn’t dominate the ball…He’s extremely unselfish as a player and he’s surprised me. I knew he could shoot the basketball good, but he’s really surprised me in how well he can shoot the basketball.”
Isaiah Whitehead:
“I’ll never notice when the scouts are there until after but [Willard] just tries to keep us level-headed and just tries to keep us confident and follow the concepts of practice while we’re there,”
“Of course it’s going to come with pressure,” he said. “I’m a big name coming in. I’m just tyring to show my teammates that it’s not all about me. It’s a team game and we’re going to try to toughen it up.”
My biggest fear about Whitehead this year was that he would want to be the show and try to do too much, ultimately leading to a disjointed and unsuccessful team (kind of like Rutgers with Mike Rosario and St. John's a few years ago). It sounds like he has a very level head though and he's just looking to let the upperclassmen lead and play his role on the team. He's a great talent, but few teams succeed with freshmen running the show. As long as he plays for the team, they should have a good year and his talent will show through and get him where he wants to be individually.
