The goal should be to have college hoops fans associate New Years Eve with the Big East, the same way Thanksgiving is associated with the Lions and Cowboys. This is a really brilliant idea by the conference. New Years Eve = Big East Opening Day Marathon.

I agree. It will be great if every year's opening games of conference play begin on NYE as this will make for a fun all day event for college hoops fans. Those who want to focus their evening time on football, so be it.

The thing is though- the 2nd football game(and 1st semifinal in 8 of the 12 years)- will start at like 4:30 or 5. So, only 2 of those games would get to go up against only an access game.

And, i'm sorry, but the 2 years where it's up against the NFL- that's just a complete non starter.

Frankly, I could care less about the conflicting football games. Selfishly, I'm "all in" for Big East hoops and that is what I will watch. The NYE marathon is great for basketball fans and I do think (regardless of your contrarian opinion on the matter) that the Fox execs have probably considered the scheduling issues. If they are okay with putting on a Big East marathon, I think we should let them do their jobs.

I was hoping they would do this again this season, awesome! Great way to tip off league play, watch all ten teams and get an idea of who has what. Well Done.

It's pretty asinine to say to keep it on New Year's Eve because of tradition. You may not personally care about football but that really doesn't matter, because enough people do. At the end of the day, like it or not, the amount of eyeballs the Big East gets on FS1 matters. Period. If 90% of sports fans are watching football, that isn't good for FS1 which isn't good for the Big East. I love the idea of the marathon, loved last years as well, and think it is a great idea/tradition to continue, but you have to schedule it strategically.

Another scenario...

Halftime Score at New Years Eve CFB Semifinal: Oregon 52, LSU 3:
Sports fans, who already have their television on, can surf to other sports channels... each of these other channels will have been cowering under toadstools in fear of the LSU game, so the ESPN family will be showing an assortment of "Arliss" re-runs, "World's Strongest Man" competitions, bowling, etc.

Those same couch potato football fans in football country decide that FS1's Big East games are a great alternative to LSU being thumped.

It's possible, but I think you will find ESPN themselves having some basketball games on as well... Not great ones but ones none the less.. I don't think the ones that are put on the opener will be all that great either for the Big East. Not necessarily throw away, but definitely not 1st or 2nd tier type games... Middling type games at the best...

The odds are pretty good that a 1/4 or 2/3 game would not be 52-3 at halftime. Only had in the title games last 5 years 1 blowout game at halftime- the rest were really close. So while your scenario is possible, it's definitely not likely...

Look you might not like football, but it is the thing that rules the roost in the US in 2014.

if people are out in bars watching the games, it could be good for theBE to be on. Multiple tv's with different sports might help BE . of course those staying home, may not be as interested

Nebraska-Omaha hockey has a game scheduled for New Years Even in Omaha so I'm guessing Creighton will be a road team this season.
Nebraska by birth, Creighton by choice.

One thing- for the tv ratings purposes- folks watching in bars don't help.

I think doing this is a HUGE risk. We risk if the ratings are terrible looking pretty stupid and frankly small time. And also- just look- these ratings prove that football is king in 2014.

What kind of match ups are you guys interested in seeing?

Here's a possible schedule that I think could work:
Game 1: Butler vs. Marquette - Had a couple of good games both last season and the year before
Game 2: St. John's vs. Seton Hall - NY/NJ rivalry with Isaiah Whitehead going up against his hometown school.
Game 3: Providence vs. Xavier - two teams with a lot of young talent, very intriguing, especially if Kris Dunn can remain healthy
Game 4: Creighton vs. DePaul - Two Central timezone teams, so a later game is almost a necessity. Could sub Marquette in for DePaul, but that was done last season.
Game 5: Nova vs. Georgetown - two of my favorites for the league title to finish off the night
