Methodology seems to be slanted overwhelmingly towards research Universities. Can't speak for any of the other BE members but Nova is certainly not a research university.

Right I was going to say that's a research Universities ranking. So of course most of the schools will be large Public Universities.

Liberal Arts schools, like Butler, are getting more involved in these areas. Honestly, pumping out good researchers and engineers is more important than history majors and English teachers in the modern world.

To continue the rankings parade I looked up the ranking of the top 1000 universities in the world and found only TWO Big East school included. Kudos to Georgetown at 118 and Creighton for ranking 490 amongst the top 1000 in academics.

No other Big East school was ranked however Loyola of Chicago was ranked at 446 and Dayton at 538. Catholic University was also ranked in the top 1000. I found our lack of recognition somewhat disappointing however the mission of most small private universities is to be very good in a small number of disciplines. This makes the achievement of Georgetown, Creighton, Loyola and Dayton even more impressive.

I did not bother to check the A-10 but Dayton is on there.

Note: copied G5 members from dbakjon.

VCU is ranked #240 on that list.

Xavier is, and never has been, a university steeped in a tradition of research. It wasn't when I was going there in the 60's (BS) and 70's (MEd) and is was not when three of my kids graduated from there decades later. Furthermore, unless things have changed since yesterday, the only department offering a doctorate from Xavier is Psychology. That, in itself, speaks loudly against the idea that XU is a research-oriented university.

Looks like Providence did not participate (they didn't select any peers).

I will say that the list of schools that chose PC as a peer is completely random. Maybe a handful make sense. I have not even heard of several of them.

Noticed ND selected a bunch of Ivies. No Ivies selected ND.

It's really not fair because SJU is much more open to taking in poor students from 1st generation immigrants and other low-socioeconomic students. Diversity seems to be more important to SJU than actually getting the best students in terms of academics. For example, Nova, PC, and G'Town are all about getting the best candidates. SJU is more of a "feed the poor" kind of school. It seems to have a mission beyond strictly GPA's and SAT's. NYC and especially Queens has changed a lot. There are no more Italian and Irish immigrants. Now they are people from the 3rd world. So of course the standards will go down naturally. SJU specifically targets these populations. The other Big East schools go for the best prospects.

With that being said, there's a huge difference between SJU undergrad and SJU graduate school. SJU has several prestigious programs for graduate students including: the MBA program, Law program, Pharmacology program (probably the most prestigious), School Psychology program, etc. That's for graduate…but in terms of undergrad it seems that SJU lets almost anyone in. It's night and day.

If Nova and those other schools were forced to diversify as extreme as SJU, their rankings would dip too.

You are essentially correct in your observations. One particularly weak area is the College of Professional Studies, where the component academic disciplines are weak and the enrollees include students accepted as two-year students, many of whom are not prepared to take legitimate college courses.

The Forbes list of the best private universities in the nation was recently published. It should not be a surprise to anyone that Georgetown was rated 28th in the nation and Villanova was rated 71st. No other Big East schools were included in the top 100.

Various other conferences did not do as well:

AAC had only Navy on the list at 27th.

C-USA had no schools on the list.

MWC had only Air Force on the list.

MAC had no schools on the list.

PAC-12 had Stanford, U of Washington (I did not know this was a private school) and USC on the list.

ACC had Notre Dame 17, Duke 23, Boston College 36, Virginia 40 and UNC 50. UNC is a private school in name only.

Sun Belt had no schools on the list.

Surprisingly the West Coast Conference had two schools listed BYU and Santa Clara.

Of course the Ivy League had all of it's schools on the list.

I was surprised to find NO colleges from the A10 except Richmond at 96.

Care to provide a link? Some of those are public if I'm not mistaken.
