This is the key point.

The polls are irrelevant. An anachronism. In a wolfed of computers, opinion polls are just that. Opinions. But tournament teams are chosen based on accomplishments. As evidenced by actual data

RPI they'll wind up with 3 after this week most likely. They're going to be a factor for sure. Next week, their tourney will be huge for them.

RPI Forecast has them with 2 in the top 25 at the end of the regular season.

What kind of a factor they will be remains to be seen. RPI is relevant to the extent that it is used to select teams for the tournament and. To seed them once they're picked. But it's not the past way to predict the outcome of games.

Louisville stacks up as a much better team than their RPI and could potentially do a lot of damage. None of the others look even like Sweet 16 teams. Not saying they can't get there because upsets happen, but on paper, they don't look like they'll be factors at this point.

Wow, the AAC fans sure are an insecure lot.

This thread will have a different feel next year after:

Georgetown and Marquette reload,
Louisville bolts for the ACC,
Southern Methodist returns to the form that saw them win one NCAA Tournament game in the last 30 years,
and Cincinnati, UConn, and Memphis slowly watch their basketball programs slip down the drain in gyms in Greenville, North Carolina and Tulsa, Oklahoma all so their football team can have the privilege of playing Temple, South Florida, and Tulane...and make less money in the process.

Put another way, the old Big East football schools shat their bed. Now they can sleep in it.

Al McGuire: "What is this?"
Waiter: "Mr. McGuire, that is a cull lobster. Sometimes when the lobsters are in the tank, they fight. This one lost a claw."
Al McGuire: "Well then take this one away and bring me the winner."

SMU won't be returning to the form next year. not with a top 5 recruit coming in. They lose 6th most minutes player and that's it. If it was anyone else, we'd be calling them a potential title contender next year.

Also- and it's been kind of quiet- Tulsa is lookign like they're getting back to what they used to be. They're #99 in RPi right now and in a 4 way tie for 1st in CUSA. If Tulsa is back to being what they used to be, that would be huge for them...

I think for us- it's huge for both Georgetown and Marquette to reload. Creighton is going to be a major question next year. 4 of the top 7 players gone. Providence loses a lot next year.

The Big East should be very good next year. Nova should still be very good and you have to think G'Town, Quette and St. John's will all be better. Seton Hall will be young, but talented. Question marks for Butler, Providence and Creighton (although Butler seems likely to be better). Not sure about Xavier. DePaul? Well...

I think both the Big East and AAC should be very good next year. Big East hopefully won't be as darn unlucky as we've been this year quite frankly. It's been when you kind of think of it just snakebit this year- just see last night with Xavier as the latest example.

We are talking about the same Tulsa team who lost this year to Oral Roberts, Missouri State, and TCU (twice)? Whose only top-50 win is a win over Southern Mississippi at home?

Also, congrats to Tulsa for being in a tie for first place, but let's not forget that they're only there because of a late 7-game winning streak over, in order, Rice (RPI 302), East Carolina (201), Old Dominion (182), Florida Atlantic (258), Florida International (221), UTEP (97), and UTSA (303); teams with an average RPI of 223. If you COULDN'T run the table against that group, you'd be in real trouble.

Adjusting to a new reality that they themselves brought on through their doomed pursuit of BCS football.

The day the Catholic Seven broke away from the Big East, following West Virginia, Syracuse, Pittsburgh, Notre Dame, and Louisville, I wondered what being in the basketball offices at Cincinnati, Temple, UConn, and Memphis must have felt like.

I imagined the string quartet on the deck of the Titanic dressed in those teams' basketball jerseys, playing wistfully as the last lifeboat floated away.

Tulsa has beaten 2 of the 3 teams in the 1st place tie- Southern Miss and Middle Tennessee. Look- I'm not saying they're back yet- but they're light years ahead of where they were even 2-3 years ago. They could easily get the CUSA spot this year which would be huge for them.

Also, not sure why you put Missouri State in a bad loss category- they are in the top 100.
