Big East Attendance figures 3/1

If you only consider Big East games, Villanova will average over 10,250 in attendance this year. I say only BE games because in OOC will don't use the WFC(99%) of the time. Beating a dead horse, but we could easily fill a 12,000 on campus arena, if only Radnor township wasn't full of so many arseholes.

Is there a reason why Villanova only plays 4 games at Wells Fargo? Seems like they draw pretty well over there, not sure what rent they pay or if they lose money by going to Wells Fargo but the attendance is alot higher.

I didn't mind going to South Philly a couple times a year when I was a student but unless you had a car, it was hard to get there as a student. I have no idea if VU runs busses down there for the students now or not, they didn't when I was there.

I think my biggest disappointment is Georgetown, I know its a off year but their numbers are way down.

PC is pretty good, the Butler 2022 game (9 pm tip and huge blizzard) completely throws the numbers out of wack. Here is the BE ONLY numbers on for PC (and finale vs MArquette -Sr night and HUGE game should be a complete sellout 12,400)

for perspective from 1988-1999 PC averaged over 10,000 per game for entire season (including OOC), I believe maxing over 11,000 for a year or two in the mid to late 90s. And in the Gomes era (03-04) they were last over 10,000. (not coincidentally also the last time we were in the NCAA tournament) The goal is to get back to that point. Clearly being in the mix and making NCAAs every year or two would be the major part of achieving that goal.

The Johnnies had over 10k for DePaul at the Garden, which is probably the most they have had for DePaul since they joined the conference. The Johnnies two lowest attended MSG games were Creighton and Xavier. Good shot those two get rotated onto campus next season and Seton Hall and Providence going to the Garden. Could see Butler in that mix as well.

Why did DePaul go to the garden, I figured that would be a horrible draw, was it just because it was on a Saturday?

I'm not sure actually. They have not played in the Garden for a while so maybe St. John's was just trying to rotate them in. They usually draw about 6-7k at the Garden which is why they hardly ever play there. St. John's makes a profit at MSG when they go over about 9k at MSG. So DePaul was actually a profitable game for them. Of the nine games, only Butler, Xavier and Creighton were under 10k. The rest (Fordham, Syracuse, Nova, Marquette, DePaul, and G'Town) were above 10k

Additionally, NCAA rules prohibit playing NCAA Tournament games on a school's home floor if they play too many games at a given location in a single year.

By limiting the number of games played at the Wells Fargo Center, Villanova is able to play at Wells Fargo in years where the arena hosts the NCAA Tournament because it is not technically their home floor. If I recall correctly, the rule is that a team cannot play an NCAA Tournament game on a floor where it plays more than three regular season games (not including conference tournament games). I imagine the rule is set at 3 to protect exempt tournaments. Philadelphia is not hosting the NCAA Tournament this year, so Villanova bumped it up to four.

Nova most successfully did this in 2006 and 2009, using those first two "netural site" NCAA Tournament games in South Philadelphia as a springboard to an Elite 8 appearance and a Final Four.

The exception to this rule is Dayton, who is permitted to play a "First Four" game at their home arena should they be placed there, because it would be unfair to either exclude Dayton, or give them a pass to the Round of 64 simply because they are the First Four's seemingly permanent host. http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketb ... -four-home

Took this off the PC board but interesting to see where all the teams stack up as far as attendance. Nothing too suprising. Villanova's numbers will go up after home games today against Marquette and Georgetown are at Wells Fargo. Average is 9,544. Based on last years numbers, this would put the Big East at 5th in attendance.

Great solid numbers across the board.
Also, PC's numbers were hurt their one game vs Butler. Because of the snow we got only like 2200 fans.

Seton Hall's home game against SJU during a major snowstorm where we got at least a foot of snow, mass transit in the county was suspended and student buses to the game were cancelled killed our attendance average.
