Funny article on how DePaul reported attendance numbers in 2013. Per the article reported attendance averaged 7,938 but actual average was 2,610. Oops.

So, it looks like Marquette is averaging 14,778 so far this season. Not bad considering the year we are having. Still a couple of marquee games left at home and our two conference home games have both been over 15,000 (Seton Hall and DePaul). We could actually wind up beating last year's 15,033 if we show up for the rest of the conference games.

I know this is probably a troll thread, but it's nice to get the information. Thanks again to Hoosierpal!

That's actually quite impressive considering the season you guys are having.

Yeah, I remember reading that. Most sports use the paid attendance number, but for DePaul I think their student tickets are free and they count them as sold out whether people come or not. I think most BE schools have students pay something for their tickets (Marquette charges $99 for student season tickets). It's too bad about DePaul, but if they can return to relevance that number could easily skyrocket after just a couple of solid years. The new arena should help too. I'm led to believe that it is right on the rail lines, so that will be convenient.

Thanks! I would guess we got more season ticket holders than normal because of the preseason predictions. We will probably be slightly better next year, but wind up with worse attendance numbers.

Georgetown does not sellout
DePaul does not sellout

You beat those 2 schools. If this is what you were fishing for.
no, not what I was " fishing" for at all. It was a straight up question. Just surprising to me that the marquee names, some of the most recognized names in hoops are not drawing crowds comparable to their population base. Even last night the number 4 team in the land was partially empty, just surprising is all.

Xavier and Villanova both sell out nearly all of their home games on campus. Villanova doesn't always fill Wells Fargo when they play downtown however.

If your school is not named after a state and you are not in a sports deprived market, then you will most likely not sell out most games. That's the reality of the world. If the Wizards, 76ers, Bucks, Bulls, Knicks, and Pacers shut down operations tomorrow you would see an immediate spike in attendance at Georgetown, Villanova, Marquette, DePaul, St. John's, and Butler simply because basketball fans would have no other choice. As is, casual fans who do not attend these universities are more likely to choose the higher level of play if they want to watch some ball (arguably higher level if we are talking about the Bucks this year). Xavier has to compete with UC in a sports saturated market.

Let's do an experiment. Let's look at the top 15 schools from last year in attendance and see what kind of conclusions we can draw.

1. Kentucky: Lexington (Population 290,000 metro 495,000). 0 professional sports franchises.
2. Syracuse: Syracuse (Population 145,000 metro 662,000). 0 professional sports franchises.
3. Louisville: Louisville (Population 605,000 metro 1.3 million). 0 professional sports franchises.
4. North Carolina: Chapel Hill (Population 57,000 part of Durham metro of 2 million). 1 professional sports franchise (NHL)
5. Indiana: Bloomington (Population 80,000 metro 175,000). 0 professional sports franchises.
6. Creighton: Omaha (Population 409,000 metro 877,000). 0 professional sports franchises.
7. Wisconsin: Madison (Population 240,000 metro 568,000). 0 professional sports franchises.
8. Tennessee: Knoxville (Population 179,000 metro 848,000). 0 professional sports franchises.
9. Ohio State: Columbus (Population 787,000 metro 1.86 million). 2 professional sports teams (NHL, MLS)
10. Kansas: Lawrence (Population 89,000 metro 113,000). 0 professional sports franchises.
11. Memphis: Memphis (Population 655,000 metro 1.3 million). 1 professional sports franchise (NBA)
12. NC State: Raleigh (Population 423,000 metro 1.2 million). 0 professional sports franchises.
13. BYU: Provo (Population 112,000 metro 526,000). 0 professional sports franchises.
14. UNLV: Vegas (Population 596,000 metro 1.9 million). 0 professional sports franchises.
15 Marquette: Milwaukee (Population 595,000 metro 2 million). 2 professional sports franchises (NBA, MLB)

Let me point out a few themes. First of all, outside of Marquette and Creighton not a single one of these schools has less than 20,000 students. Second, just 4 of these schools compete with pro franchises. Only Memphis and Marquette compete with NBA teams. Third, almost all of these cities are medium sized (lots of people, just not enough to attract pro sports). I didn't feel like typing it out, but the next 15 follow a similar trend. Basic logic should lead you to draw simple conclusions from these kinds of numbers.

Thumping your chest about attendance numbers is very...Dayton-esque. In fact, if they were in the top 15 of attendance, Dayton would be a perfect case study for the demonstrated effect.
