This is misleading as Allen, Okafor, and Porter didn't win any of the major recognized awards (Naismith, AP, Wooden). Not sure which ones they did win.

I'm not sure what you mean by "recognized", but here's where they come from. (I'm not sure what makes one award superior to another. There werenot a tremendous number of unanimous choices in any year)

Ray Allen was UPI National Player of the Year.
Emeka Okafor shared the NABC Player of the Year Award with Jameer Nelson.
Otto Porter was the CBS Sports National Player of the Year.

This is a bit ridiculous and if I come across as disrespectful to McDermott forgive me. But...here's my perspective. To even think about putting McDermott in the same sentence as Ewing and Mullin is complete sacrilige. They were Dream Teamers; HOFers; I think the 2 best players this conference has ever seen. It's a different age of college hoops. If you took the best players that left early for the draft and had them stay in school over the past few years GM would not have made AA in any year let alone 2 or 3. If he wins NPOY he'd fall somewhere in the Scottie Reynolds category: 1st team AA, great college player but not an all- time great. To my Creighton brethren I'm not meaning to be an a$$hole but there would be 20 players I'd rank ahead of him in terms of all-time BE greats, even if he wonNPOY. Sorry.

I have to disagree, I think I initially came at this great question from a totally short-sighted point of view. It's not whether Doug McD would have had the best season ever in the BE if he won NPOY...it's what would Doug McD winning the NPOY contribute to the legacy of the conference we all love. Consider this, if Doug McD wins NPOY at this critical time in BE history, it would stand as one of the most defining moments demonstrating the Big East's resiliency & continued relevancy period. From that perspective, he would instantly become a made man in BE lore forever IMO.

It's impossible for Doug to be in the class with Ewing in terms of what he meant to college basketball, but McDermott would be the first Big East NPOY in almost 30 years so that would be something to celebrate. FWIW, Kemba Walker and Doug McDermott have both won the Lute Olson award given to the most outstanding non-freshman men's college basketball player in NCAA Division I competition. That's sort of a NPOY award too.

Right, in the context of what this upcoming year means to the conference, a McDermott POY would be huge. If he could combine that with a deep Creighton NCAA run to the E-8 or Final Four, that would give him some Big East Ring of Honor status. :)

Imagine if a player from former BE school won NPOY, like Shabazz Napier, Russ Smith, CJ Fair, etc....uuggghhhhh!

I will concede that it will all hinge on the possibility of Creighton getting to a FF or more--winning the NC. If McDermott can do that this year and win NPOY then I would place him near the Top 10. But next to Ewing and Mullin? No.

To make my point about a different era consider this...when DM won AA honors the last 2 years these are the guys that would have still been around had they not left early:

John Wall
Gordon Hayward
Greg Monroe
Derrick Favors
DeMarcus Cousins
Paul George
Ed Davis
Derrick Williams
Kyrie Irving
Tyreke Evans
Jru Holliday
Anthony Davis
M. Kidd-Gilchrist
Jared Sullinger
Harrison Barnes
Marcus Morris
Markieff Morris
Kemba Walker

When Ewing and Mullin played, guys were mostly staying for 4 years and yet they dominated their eras. GM has not done the same in an era where most of the talent leaves early. So to put him in the same sentence is way off base.

I won't argue that and am not arguing his place on Mt Rushmore either, but Doug would be in rare air as a 3 time AA. Period.

Totally agree fundamentally, but that point reflects more about the effect the high school to NBA and the 1 & done eras have had on cbb. F4's don't mean as much as they used to if you follow that critique of Doug McD. CBB will never return to the old ways so why hold today's game & it's players to that antiquated standard. If he wins NPOY give him his due; no strings attached. That's why I stayed away from who was actually better argument...
