This is misleading as Allen, Okafor, and Porter didn't win any of the major recognized awards (Naismith, AP, Wooden). Not sure which ones they did win.
This is a bit ridiculous and if I come across as disrespectful to McDermott forgive me. But...here's my perspective. To even think about putting McDermott in the same sentence as Ewing and Mullin is complete sacrilige. They were Dream Teamers; HOFers; I think the 2 best players this conference has ever seen. It's a different age of college hoops. If you took the best players that left early for the draft and had them stay in school over the past few years GM would not have made AA in any year let alone 2 or 3. If he wins NPOY he'd fall somewhere in the Scottie Reynolds category: 1st team AA, great college player but not an all- time great. To my Creighton brethren I'm not meaning to be an a$$hole but there would be 20 players I'd rank ahead of him in terms of all-time BE greats, even if he wonNPOY. Sorry.

I have to disagree, I think I initially came at this great question from a totally short-sighted point of view. It's not whether Doug McD would have had the best season ever in the BE if he won NPOY...it's what would Doug McD winning the NPOY contribute to the legacy of the conference we all love. Consider this, if Doug McD wins NPOY at this critical time in BE history, it would stand as one of the most defining moments demonstrating the Big East's resiliency & continued relevancy period. From that perspective, he would instantly become a made man in BE lore forever IMO.
GO GET EM' DOUG!!!

Right, in the context of what this upcoming year means to the conference, a McDermott POY would be huge. If he could combine that with a deep Creighton NCAA run to the E-8 or Final Four, that would give him some Big East Ring of Honor status.

To make my point about a different era consider this...when DM won AA honors the last 2 years these are the guys that would have still been around had they not left early:
When Ewing and Mullin played, guys were mostly staying for 4 years and yet they dominated their eras. GM has not done the same in an era where most of the talent leaves early. So to put him in the same sentence is way off base.
