Delaney Wants B1G Tourney at MSG and Not a Week Early...

Postby ArmyVet » Thu Oct 11, 2018 12:32 pm

Just saw this tweeted out from Big Ten media days.

Delany said #B1G has talked with Madison Square Garden about the future. "We’re presented them with a powerful emotional plan. We think we can elevate Madison Square Garden to the next level with regard to the postseason. We will not play early."

"Emotional plan?"

That's a new approach.

Haven't I been saying the last 2 years or so that these guys (B1G/ACC) aren't playing. They want to run over us...with a train.
We've got dibs, but need to get to work on the renewals for 2026 or whenever it is. ;)

Anyone know exactly how the current deal is structured?

I would imagine Delany will offer double/triple what the current deal is...and adding a day as the B1G has 14 current members. He could talk 2 days as the B1G could expand by 2026. Doubling the deal And adding an additional day of games...tough to match. The BEast and the Garden have been a pair for 35 years and counting... Will history and tradition have a spot in MSG's heart? Will having the traditional NY and East Coast area teams leverage what will probably be an outrageous money offer? Does the MSG value what they have built and take offense to Delany's attempt to "buy them"? Will the dinars be too much to pass up - money talks...and old times sake walks. If we can put up another 2 or 3 national champions over the next 8 years, it will definitely bolster our case. C'mon group.

The BEast doesn't want a turf war...but the others do. Six years ago a 10 year extension was a long time; a big deal. No so these days. 8 years ain't long and Delany is doing a gtmo and starting extremely early (I started talking 'bout the Creighton Centennial 6 years early-back in the day.).

The BEast can win again...but it will take creativity, daring, and a bold future prospectus on our part. Are Val, Stu, and the fellas up to the task?

The biggest hurdle for the Big Ten is deal length. Are they going to commit to the Garden for the next decade? Or is it to put it into the rotation of tourney sites? If it's the rotation, then I can see why he uses the term "emotional plan", because having a consistent representation at MSG year after year is what is going to give the Big East an advantage (not to mention the Big East's tourney had better attendance than the Big Ten's).

As an aside, Chicago and Indy will always be better spots to host the Big Ten tournament. I know the Big Ten and the ACC (whose tourney is always better in North Carolina) like to flex their financial muscles, but at this time I don't believe either league is fully committed to MSG in the same way the Big East is. I have no doubt that both leagues will try to lay claim to the arena though, and as gtmo said, it's up to Val, Stu and others in charge to convince them that the Big East is the best way to go in the future.

Emotionally huh? Sounds like he was doing a lot of crying and begging them to kick out the far superior Big East conference.

Elevate? Hah. That mid-major conference couldn't draw with no competition. MSG would be completely empty for B1G games during championship week.

Funny that the tweet said "emotional plan" and the article said "promotional plan".

if another team can notch some FFs or Nattys beside nova then there's no chance MSG goes to the B1G.

Wow, didn't see that one coming. Not good news, but not yet bad news. We'll see what happens.

Great find Irishdawg. Delany's talking "out years" beginning in 2023. He defines out years as those years they're not playing their tourney in Naptown or Chicago.
We need to go ahead and lock down the MSG for as long a contract as we can get...15-20 years (if MSG is willing). Delany's a snake...and he will bite. With this heads up we can be proactive and lock down the MSG, if it fits with the BE master plan.
