I visited Hinkle this past weekend and all I can say is that it is the single most amazing basketball arena that I have ever seen. It literally drips with history and tradition. I strongly recommend that all fans visit Hinkle at least once. Butler fans were very friendly and gracious. It was a great day except for the game!

Great question! I looked it up on Google and came up with this

"Field House or Fieldhouse is a common name for indoor sports arenas and stadiums, mostly used for college basketball, volleyball, or ice hockey."

and

"An Arena is an enclosed area, often circular or oval-shaped, designed to showcase theater, musical performances, or sporting events"

Doesn't help much, does it.

My family is thinking of a summer vacation road trip to Chicago this summer. One of the places I already have circled to visit on the way is Hinkle.

Also, originally, from what I remember, "arena" translated from Latin means "sand"... Roman competitions, like gladiator battles, took place on the sandy surface of a colosseum or amphitheater, with seating all around.

A "palestra" in Latin had to do with a competition area within a larger building, I think separated by colonnades. I'm going from memory here, so i might be all wrong... it's not often that my 1-year of freshman high school Latin in 1982 comes in handy... but that was 32 years ago...!

For some reason I always associate fieldhouses with having giant tall windows on the outside walls, to get daylight in. Hinkle has a bunch of windows behind each basket and also on each arched end of the building... I noticed during the Friars game that started in the afternoon, that their was a huge reflection from the windows on the court.

Had a great trip to Hinkle this year. Fun, yes. Historic, yes. Am I going back? No big hurry. Concessions, bathrooms and parking suck. I guess I am spoiled. Come to the Clink. Best venue in the USA.

Concessions and bathrooms are being fixed in the upcoming renovations. The parking, not so much.

It has been my experience, that a fieldhouse tends to be a sports venue with a bunch of retractable seating that has a diverse list of use for various sports - their practices and matches.
