Places to eat / drink within walking distance to MSG

Rookie BE Tourney visitor here. There's a discussion on our board about places near MSG where fans hang out before and after games. Anyone have a recommendation of location within walking distance to MSG?

Omaha! First off, I am a Villanova fan but I am a New Yorker so I have done this a bunch and there is a million places to go but I'll keep it around MSG. if you are looking to grab a steak dinner before the game check out Nick and Stef's. It is attached to the Garden and you can walk right into MSG from the restaurant. As far as pubs there are a bunch right in the area. Stout is going to be packed and is the go to for everybody plus Blarney Rock is right next door, but if you are looking for some other places right around the area that might not be as crazy check out Tir Na Nog (place I really enjoy), Feile, The Thirsty Fan, and The Molly Wee Pub. Sometimes just walking the blocks right around MSG you can just stumble on a great spot.

You are gonna have great time!

Some Marquette friends and I went to MSG last year for the MU-St. John's game. Aside from getting to see Marquette win its first Big East Championship, we sampled some of the best food the midtown area has to offer.

For Dinner, I recommend Rare in Chelsea, and their rooftop bar, Rare View. For Italian, I'll recommend where we went the night after the game, Patzeria Family & Friends on 48th Street between 8th and 9th Avenues. The owner there is a class act, loves talking hoop, and the food is fantastic.

If you're looking for something a little more iconic/touristy, then Carnegie Deli is delicious, so long as you love meat and being full for three days.

Two bars just east of MSG hit it big with us, Rattle N Hum on 33rd has an amazing beer selection, and depending on the weather, VU Rooftop Bar on 32nd street on top of the La Quinta has a great view of the Empire State Building.
Al McGuire: "What is this?"
Waiter: "Mr. McGuire, that is a cull lobster. Sometimes when the lobsters are in the tank, they fight. This one lost a claw."
Al McGuire: "Well then take this one away and bring me the winner."

PS - If the weather is nice, Local West has a cool rooftop bar and that is literally right across the street from MSG. http://www.localcafenyc.com/events.htm.

You can't go wrong with any restaurant. Those closest to the Garden will be packed with fans from the tournament, so it's fun to go to those and strike up a conversation with fans of any or the Big East schools.

A real treat nearby The Garden that you shouldn't miss while you're in town as long as the weather is cooperating is the High Line, a rails-to-trails pedestrian greenway built on an old elevated railroad bed. Take a short walk from The Garden over to 10th Avenue & West 30 Street to enter it. It runs for over a mile down The West Side. You'll get views of the City like no others that can be had AND you'll avoid crowded sidewalks and crossing street traffic. You can get off and back on at various points, at any of which will be restaurants you can enjoy. Not only that, but you can walk off your meal on the way back to the Garden!

Because of the walking time involved, it's probably best saved for an afternoon when there are no day games but only the evening double.header.

I second the high line! Very cool "elevated" trail.

Btw if anyone is still looking a for a hotel close to MSG, check of the Tryp Wyndham. It is less than a 5 min walk a way. Nice, hip small little hotel.

Well walking distance means different things to different people. My favorite NYC restaurant is Keens it's an old school steakhouse and is about a 15 minute walk from MSG.

Remember NYC has the greatest public transit system in the world no reason to confine yourself to just near MSG. The other place I always try to get to on trips to New York is Da Nico in little Italy.

pki nailed it with Keen's. If you are looking to grab a steak and not just hit the pubs Keen's is a can't miss and very close to The Garden. Also, like I said, Nick and Stef's is an underappreciated spot connected to MSG for food if you are looking to keep it very local around MSG.

Was going to chime in for our Omahanian brothers. If this is your first time in NYC you'll quickly grasp that you can literally go to 150 different establishments and have an amazing time. You can certainly start around MSG and find some great places where they'll be lots of fans. But I would encourage you to venture around Manhattan and take in all it has to offer. There are GREAT restaurants literally everywhere. It's quite a place. Hopefully the weather will cooperate and you can walk around. Tremendous energy in that city.

I wonder if we all should try to figure out a HLOH meet up place.?. Wouldn't mind meeting a few posters and wishing their team well.
