Marquette AD resigns unexpectedly

Sounds like this came straight out of left field. Any back story?

Left field ish. The guy was pretty tight with Pilarz (recently resigned school president). Since Pilarz resigned we have seen a mass exodus of his staff. There weren't really any indications, but it isn't super surprising. Right now we have an interim president and AD/VP, and funnily enough both are the ones that occupied their positions before the recently departed were hired. They were still employed by the university, but want fewer responsibilities. We are in good hands until suitable replacements can be found (the interim guys oversaw Marquette's rise back to national prominence on the bball court, and the AD was the one who led us out of independent status and into the Big East).
This is my opinion. There are many like it, but this one is mine.

Is Buzz happier today or not?

Most likely. Word around campus was that Buzz and Larry butted heads a fair amount, although I haven't heard of anything recently.

That was my understanding.

If you're looking for a president, I hear Lawrence Biondi's available.

I honestly think him moving on is a really good thing for Marquette. Just didn't fit.
Coach Al Mcguire:
"I like seashells and balloons, ribbons and medals, bare feet and wet grass."
"When I'm losing, they call me nuts. When I'm winning, they call me eccentric."
"Queen of victory, pray for us."

Had the chance to meet him at a Marquette Club of Chicago event about a year ago. Really straightforward guy who didn't really dance around "PR speak" and hinted at MU's future in the Big East before the Catholic 7 breakaway. Seemed to be on his game.

That being said, "unexpectedly" is probably the exact wrong word to use here. Once Pilarz left, the writing was on the wall that Larry Williams' days were numbered.
Al McGuire: "What is this?"
Waiter: "Mr. McGuire, that is a cull lobster. Sometimes when the lobsters are in the tank, they fight. This one lost a claw."
Al McGuire: "Well then take this one away and bring me the winner."

Nobody said he was a bad guy, it's just a questionable decision when one of your first moves as AD is to put the very successful head men's basketball coach on blast.

Marquette coach Buzz Williams said Saturday he was shocked by the sudden resignation of athletic director Larry Williams.

Unexpectedly? I guess if he says so.
