I agree with you about JT III. I really like the guy and his emphasis on solid fundamentals. But he is so committed to the methodical style of Princeton offense that his teams don't seem to have any way to turn up the heat on an opponent when they have them on the run and put that opponent away. The result is that he keeps opponents in the game when they should have no business hanging around as long as they do. Combine that with the high emotions and atmosphere of the NCAA tournament and you have the string of tournament upsets that we've seen in recent years, which is death in a single elimination tournament.
IMO he's got to figure out a way to increase the tempo defensively to force turnovers and take advantage of having the upper hand in a game so he can completely end his opponent's chances when he has his foot on their neck. Allowing teams to hang around simply creates opportunities for losses. The whole Princeton offense is designed to limit shots for both teams and thereby keep the score close so the game is up for grabs in the closing minutes. Carill's plan was to use up 30 seconds of the clock on every possession, so that. A 10-15 point margin is kept within 5-7 points at the end of the game, making it a game that either team can win.
That approach works great for a team Iike Princeton, which is playing with a talent deficit whenever it plays a big time opponent. but how is it to Georgetown's advantage to keep games close with the kind of talent advantage they have?
