DePaul - Yup

Postby Hayes-Healy SS » Thu Jan 08, 2015 2:05 pm

Instead of replying to the several threads on the Demons, I'll just start an independent one to respond en masse. I recognize/know most of the other DePaul posters here (we are a small fandom) so I'm sure we would sing a similar same tune. That being:

A) We've been beat to crap the last decade and are fully aware of the programs short-comings.
B) Most of us realize that OP, and by extension JLP, aren't long-term answers for either position.
C) While we realize that short-term success does not portend anything long-term, we still are fans and want to watch entertaining Basketball. God knows the hell we've lived through the last ten years.
D) I personally find the current bitching by other fan bases quite humorous. Here's an old piece of advice a coach once gave a team I played on. Don't get pissed at the other team who you lost too and felt was inferrior (in your eyes). You lost because you did not play better than your opponent, and its on YOU.
E) And come to the realization that while in the end DePaul might not be a good team, there is enough talent and discipline on this team for them not to suck as bad as they had in the past. Thus, if you leave a couple of our reasonably good 3 point shooters wide the hell open, don't bitch about it if the kid drains 4 or 5 in your face and you end up losing by double digit points.
F) The six game losing streak, and by extension the 3 game wining streak, probably tells you what this team is. A team that can get extremely hot or extremely cold based on their shooting and defensive effort. If Big East opponents continue to look past DePaul and not give a crap about defending (ala Creighton last night), expect more WTF losses on your end the rest of the conference slate.

That is all. Hopefully DePaul can continue to win and roll on through the season. Perhaps OP channelled his inner Lou Brown, and in the immortal words of the 1989 cinematic classic Major League, "Let's see if we can give 'em a nice big big sh#tburger to eat"!

Personally, I see this team obviously coming back down to Earth. But as a fan, I'm now intrigued enough by the effort to make DePaul basketball appointment viewing again

Well, there seems to be a lot of DePaul fans crawling out of the woodwork now. It's ok to finally remove that paper bag covering their heads. I'm just kidding, I know you guys from the DePaul Board.

As a DePaul alumnus and fan, I am happy to see them win their first three Big East games against Marquette and Xavier at home and Creighton on the road. I definitely agree that head coach Oliver Purnell and athletic director Jean Lenti Ponsetto are not adequate long term choices for the Blue Demons men's basketball team, who last made the NCAA Tournament in 2004 where they beat Dayton in the first round. DePaul also made the NIT''s Elite Eight in 2007. I miss the winning days when Dave Leitao coached DePaul. Hopefully the Blue Demons can pull an upset at Villlanova.

I can empathize with you DePaul guys. I go back to the 50's as a Xavier fan and to the 60's as a Xavier season ticket holder. Following the Muskies' NIT Championship in 1958, there was very little to cheer about for over 20 years. Even in the early years of the Bob Staak Era and Xavier's membership in what is now the Horizon League, there was only a glimmer of hope among Xavier fans. A turning point was when we scheduled our games at a "Big Time" venue, The Cincinnati Gardens. Recruiting improved; fans "felt" they were in a bigger time atmosphere; and the MCC (as it was then called) stated to become more relevant as the membership improved.

So some of us know and understand the angst you have experienced since the 2 Meyer Eras of Blue Demon Glory. I hope what you have seen over the past 10 days or so is a harbinger of brighter days to come.

DePaul is now 3-1 in conference after losing to Villanova @ Villanova by 17, despite having a spread of 21, and is now 4th in conference behind Villanova, Seton Hall, and Providence.

Thank you, muskienick!

Very poor showing again by DePaul against Nova yesterday.

I too have had season tickets in the family since I was 6 and attended my first DePaul game in 1968...I am only 52. So I have watched them early on being terrible, then built a great program from about 1976 - 1992. Now we have been down another 22 years with about 3 good years in between.

Chicago has the best talent in the country IMO. The right coach and administration can make this happen and make the other Big East members proud. We need our DePaul program to be successful for the conference to reach its highest level.

I believe we will give Gtown a good game on Tuesday.

We all hope DePaul returns to glory, or at least mediocrity. How DePaul has been over the last 10 years is unacceptable, but DePaul fans already know that. I'm in the faction rooting against DePaul (and Creighton and Marquette) because they can only really be a bad loss to teams. That doesn't mean I hate DePaul or that I never want them to be good again. I wish they'd replace Purnell with someone who wasn't afraid to bend the rules a little bit...
