as someone said St. John's is one of the only schools that doesn't have blue as one of the colors, why would you want to blend in with everyone else.

I'm a homer, but I hate the fact that all of a sudden alternate uniforms are black. Why black? Black is not your color. We were the only team to wear black jerseys, now everyone does. Alternates should be grey or the school's third color.

Totally agree FriarForever... there used to be only 4 teams in sports that wore black uniforms... the Friars, the Raiders, the White Sox (they went to those deadball-era throwbacks in '76) and the Spurs. The White Sox actually changed in '81 or so to red white and blue (those computer looking uniforms). So through the 80's, it was the Raiders, the Spurs and the Friars. It was part of our identity and it was pretty bad-ass. The Steelers wore black but they had/have a ton of gold too so they didn't count.

I think things changed when Gretzky was traded to the LA Kings (late 80's, early 90's)... the Kings switched from the Lakers' purple-gold colors to black and white (or silver)... thinking it through further, the Kings move might've been based on Mike Tyson always wearing black trunks, socks and shoes in the ring... it became a bad-ass move, and everyone joined in... I mean, c'mon, Louisville and Notre Dame both wore black road uni's at the Dunk in their last appearances.

With Tyson, there is/was a boxing rule where the boxers had to be in different colors. Sometimes when his opponents picked first, they'd pick black on black just to aggravate the guy. But Tyson would still wear black, and then he'd pay the fine that would be doled out at him.

Anyway, get off my lawn.

BJack, like most things, if you want to find out why things are they way they are, just search for the $ trail. Why black? Simple, apparel sales. Sales of black logo'd apparel (Raiders are a great example) sells substantially higher than others. No one is buying Raiders gear because of the success of that team. For whatever reason--maybe the "bad ass" angle as you present or something else--as apparel sales skyrocketed, the black logo was embraced by anyone who wanted to maximize their ability to cash in on it. If you look at many of the new expansion professional sports franchises that came into their leagues in the 80's and 90's, most had black as a primary color (T'Wolves, Orl Magic, Miami Heat, Carolina Panthers, Jax Jags, Balt Ravens, etc.). Why? They are not stupid.

Well I hate other teams wearing Gray/Grey since it used to be our thing. Providence is the only school I'm a little ok with wearing gray since black + white= gray, but I hate that Uconn, WV, Villanova, and yes even once Syracuse have worn gray alternate jerseys. Most schools don't have a 3rd color and Black and white are basically all colors or the absence of color so they seem pretty universal. Plus people think black is cool so buy lots of it.

That's true, it's always about the money. So black alternates are here to stay.

Georgetown's school colors from what I've read have always been blue and gray, but through the 1982 season they had those cool uniforms that were like royal blue with black letters I think... the ones that they wore in the Superdome final vs UNC. Their homes were white from what I remember.

Starting in the 83 season, the Hoyas switched to navy blue roads and gray homes, basically the same colors they still use (though had a couple of years with white homes I think in early 2000's). Anyway, the Hoyas' navy blue roads with gray matched the same colors as the roads of the Cowboys, who had switched road colors for the 1981 season...

Dallas had switched to navy-gray from a truer blue because by the end of the 1980 season they considered their true blue jerseys jinxed. Unlike most NFL teams back then, Dallas wore white at home (the LA Rams, Chargers and Dolphins are the only others I can think of that occasionally wore white at home at times, maybe in September games because they kept cooler in the hot weather). Dallas lost a bunch of tough games apparently while wearing the true blue roads... Super Bowl V was one example, but I'm too young to remember that game or other specific early games. I do remember that teams would wear non-traditional white at home sometimes to mess with Dallas' head.

Chuck Howley, Super Bowl V, 1970's Dallas True Blue Roads:

Bob Lilly, Super Bowl V:

Sleepy Floyd Whites 1980:

As I remember it, the final straw was in the 1980 NFC Championship, at Philadelphia, where the Wilbert Montgomery Eagles wore white at home, forcing the Cowboys into their true blues, and Philly blew them out (maybe some Villanova fans remember that). After that game they had had enough, and since the Cowboys were "America's Team" (obnoxious in my opinion), it was a big deal for them to change their "brand", like if the Yankees or Canadiens had switched. The new uniforms were popular and in their day they were unique, so Georgetown decided to switch for the 83 season (and the Hoyas kinda owe their colors to the Cowboys).

Man, sorry for the long blabbering... let me know if anything here is wrong, going off the top of my head from memory... I need a life...! and man, I gotta get back to work...!

^^^The only thing wrong with your post is that the Cowboy ARE America's team. Don't scoff at that!

I'm back from my self imposed exile. I was just in a real foul mood Thursday night, especially with the Thomas incident before that.
But this might be the last decent season for SJU for a while and want to see the nfinishing product of our seniors.

Get a taste of the NCAA.

Actually, Xavier's official colors are described as follows: Xavier Blue (a dark blue), Silver Gray, and White.

Xavier will have an alternate black uniform for use at some time during the 2014-2015 season.

Its home uniforms are either mainly white with blue or blue and and gray trim or silver-gray with blue or blue and white trim.

It looked like Minnesota had an easier time over Franklin Pierce 109-57.
