RPI Top 100

Postby Hall2012 » Tue Oct 07, 2014 12:24 pm

The Big East finished last year with 7 of the 10 teams in the RPI top 100 and may have had 8 at some point during the season.

Can we beat that this year and finish with 8 or 9?

Would it be possible to get the entire league into the to 100 at the same time? Not necessarily this year, but in the future?

Also, does anyone see this as important? Would you rather have 3 t25 teams and 8-9 t100 or 5 t25 teams and the other 5 100+ ?

That little number next to your name gives you a heck of lot of extra publicity. I think we would need a rotation every few years for the last two top 25 spots if we are going to keep everyone visible and competitive, but I would rather have the added publicity. Plus, it depends on where in the top 100 those teams are. It doesn't do us much good if we have 3 top 25 teams, and 6 in 70-90 range. That's still only 3 NCAA tourney teams.
This is my opinion. There are many like it, but this one is mine.

Not sure why this is so close. 5 top 25 teams? That would be insane success and we would once again grab the national headlines and national attention. We all know RPI is important, but most people are just general fans who barely pay attention that seriously. These lay people only care about top 25 rankings. To a lot of common fans, your program is dead unless it's ranked. Being on top 25 lists is what gets your name out there and grants respect. I'd be thrilled to have 3 ranked teams…5 would be like the old days. I wouldn't expect 5 at all but if it happened it would be incredible.

Also more importantly if you have 5 top 25 teams- you have 5 top 6 seeded teams in the tournament. Means you have MUCH more of a chance of success than a year like last year where you had a 11 and a 12 in a PIG.

It's really just question of how important parity in the league is. 5 ranked teams with the rest of the league being absolute garbage (a la the AAC last year) or 3 ranked teams (still 30% of the conference) but 6 or 7 teams with realistic tourney aspirations. They both have their positives and negatives.
