30 for 30 Shorts: "Untucked"

ESPN has been supplementing its "30 for 30" series with other short features. This one was put together by Marquette alumnus Danny Pudi (NBC's "Community"), on Marquette's unique, and ultimately banned jerseys from the 1970s.

As an aside, this only scratches the surface. A "30 for 30" on Al McGuire, would not only be fascinating, but would easily have a wealth of material to push the program to the full two hours between those 1970s teams (The only team to win more games in the 1970s than Marquette was John Wooden's UCLA), his showdown with Adolph Rupp, the racial tension in America at the time, the wild uniforms, turning down the NCAA bid in 1970, and going out on top in 1977 with a buzzer-beating win in the Final Four and a win over Dean Smith in the Championship.
Al McGuire: "What is this?"
Waiter: "Mr. McGuire, that is a cull lobster. Sometimes when the lobsters are in the tank, they fight. This one lost a claw."
Al McGuire: "Well then take this one away and bring me the winner."

To be fair, those are pretty ugly uniforms. Not sure why someone thought it was a good idea to have the school name on the bottom of the jersey.

I watched it earlier tonight. Really great stuff. It is important to note that Marquette went through a uniform phase that had everyone talking before the days of Oregon, Nike, Under Armor and all these other schools and manufacturers that are trying to make more money off of merchandising.

My dad went to Notre Dame, and when I went to Marquette, he told me he remembered going to basketball games and "Watching Digger Phelps and Al McGuire try to outdress each other," and then he'd pause for a second, his eyes would get big, and he'd continue, "and this was THE SEVENTIES, so you can only imagine."
