OOC games to watch Mon 3/10

Postby stever20 » Mon Mar 10, 2014 12:55 am

Quiet day(only 13 games total)

would say watch out for the WCC.
St Mary's vs Gonzaga
San Francisco vs BYU

Bubble teams need to root for Gonzaga and BYU. A St Mary's win may get them a 3rd team into the tourney if they could beat both of them.

Other than that, not much on Monday(or Tuesday if Gonzaga/BYU both win).

I'm not sold on byu being a lock at this point. I think a loss to sf puts them
squarely on the bubble.

You might have a point. They don't have a single win over anyone in the top 25 and that killed Southern Mississippi's chances last year despite an RPI that should have gotten them in. So, they might take a second look at BYU. But they do have 3 wins over teams in the top 50 and I expect that would be enough to get them a bid.

I think the thing about BYU is they could wind up with at least 1 top 25 win(Gonzaga-26), and perhaps a 2nd if things play out right(Texas- 32 right now) Also they've done so much away from home- 8 road/neutral wins. USF wouldn't be a bad loss either(they're 64 right now).

Southern Miss didn't have a single top 50 win(that's what killed USM last year).

Agree - they certainly have the wins of a "safe" team. However, they also have 4 losses to teams with 135+ rpi...and has a wcc team ever received an at large bid with 11 losses? Seems like a lot for mid-level conference. In the end it all depends on what the committe values more.... Good wins or bad losses.

It probably helps them that BYU's non-conference schedules is ranked 8th. A road win over #43 Stanford is basically a top 25 win in the Selection Committee's eyes too. Computer numbers (Kenpom 48 and Sagarin 42) would be borderline with a loss though, and yeah, those 4 losses hurt, even if they were all on the road. Interesting resume.

I think I'll root for San Francisco and hope the loss knocks BYU out, and take my chances on the Zags winning the championship game. We need help and hopefully a BYU loss coupled with a Johnnies win against Providence helps us leapfrog them.

^^^ Don't forget we beat San Fran, so them winning would help our RPI. Hard to choose who to root for here. Best case scenario would be San Fran beating BYU and losing to Gonzaga. But then, what happens if they beat Gonzaga? Do they become top 50? That may do more to help SJU.

no way does USF winning the tourney help St John's... Not at all. It steals a spot that could have been for them.
