The Dawgs play Manchester University tomorrow. Anyone know the historical significance of Manchester College's hoops history? You have to be a true Hoosier to know this one.

I'm always in for a story. Let's have it.
This is my opinion. There are many like it, but this one is mine.

Isn't Manchester U coached by a former Butler coach? Whoever came before Thad Matta?

Excellent guess, but wrong answer. You are thinking of Marian University who is coached by Todd Lickliter.

Here is a hint to the answer. Think New Castle High School hoosier hysteria legend + Indiana University Hoosiers All American+ first round NBA Draft Choice of the Dallas Mavericks. This guy first coached at Manchester University and has coached at four other universities since.

Are you talking about Alford?

Ding, Ding, Ding, we have a winner!! Steve Alford played at New Castle High School, went on to star on IU's 1987 National Championship team (Keith Smart hit the shot that put a dagger into Jim Boehim), was a first round pick of the Mavericks, but only lasted four years in the NBA. His first coaching gig was at Manchester University, where he went 31-1 his fourth and final year. The only loss that year was in the DIII championship game. Next stop was SW Missouri (now Missouri State), then onto Iowa, New Mexico and now UCLA.

Marquette, you can collect your prize at the door when you leave.

I'm pretty sure Cujaysfan was referring to Alford as well.

He's not held in too high esteem in these parts after his years at SMS.

I ignored that post due to the classless nature of the last line. We're above that kind of nonsense.
