Injury Reports 2019-20

Postby Xuperman » Wed Oct 30, 2019 4:39 am

Xavier hit with a rash of injuries less than a week from the opener. Jason Carter has been nursing a bad ankle for weeks....recently Tyrique Jones has been out with some sort of back injury and Dekeyvan Tandy is wearing a boot for a stress fracture. My concern is these becoming nagging/reoccurring especially Jones' back.

How's everyone else doing? I know CU got some bad news and Bryan Antoine is slow recovering for VU but would like to hear more.

For Butler, just a few minor things, nothing serious.

SR - Henry Baddley missed Butler's exhibition game on Saturday with a concussion. You never know about how long those last, but I would guess he'll be back to start the season.
FR (RS) - Markese Hastings missed Butler's exhibition game on Saturday, still recovering from off-season hip surgery. His status for the start of the season is questionable.
SR - Derrik Smits has reportedly been banged up most of this summer/fall, which has limited his practice time. But he played last Saturday, so I don't think he will miss any game time from it.

XUP---Steele sounded confident that Jones could play if needed, that is good.

Yes, Antoine still recovering supposed to practice in a few weeks. Gillespie got his nose smashed (DCR elbow in practice)---fractured and had surgery. Was supposed to hear yesterday if he could play (with a mask). Not sure what happened there yet.

Jayce Johnson week to week with a high knee sprain didn't play in the exhibition yesterday.

Dexter Akanno needed stitches yesterday but continued to play.

On the positive side of the injury topic, I noticed Emmitt Holt is healthy enough to make a real impact...Gotta be the best “feel good” story in the BE. If he can come anywhere close to the production posted in that exhibition, the Friars are down right scary! I think it comes down to whether he can see 15-20 minutes of PT because if he can, he will produce. I mean is it possible he could start? Watson, Holt, Diallo on the wing, Pipkin at point and Reeves at SG along with an endless bench....yikes!

This conference is just loaded beyond belief. Which means inevitably there will be a few teams that are major disappointments. Even I, the eternal optimist, recently have experienced some uncomfortable moments pondering what lies ahead....man, this is going to be EPIC!

There is no way David Duke does not start. You will see the biggest leap of any Friar from him this season. I suspect it will be Holt coming off the bench but a starting lineup of Watson, Holt, Diallo, Duke and Pipkens would not surprise me. Reeves, White and the rest off the bench. Holt played 29 minutes in the 1st exhibition game and had a monster game. He says he's back and his play seems to prove it. This is huge for the Friars obviously because he was our best player before his devastating illness.

Regarding injuries Watson is close but will miss 1st game. Pipkens is back after being out for a month with a hamstring, he got a little run in the scrimmage with Purdue. No word on the freshman Greg Gantt. He is still nursing a sore achilles.

Actually, Jones has a knee injury. It's Carter that has a back issue. Both are practicing and it's safe to say that both should be ready to play for next week's Tuesday night opener against Jacksonville. Tandy's foot injury is more problematic, and he could easily be out longer than two weeks. I am hoping that he is back by the time Xavier plays in the Charleston tournament in about three weeks.
Xavier will surprise. Never count them out of the Dance.

Jones played well against Indianapolis in a defense orientated win.

The friars appear to be getting healthy according to reports today. Cooley mentioned Gantt is day to day and Watson is close also. Pipkins was close to full participation at practice. Holt looks all the way back from his near death illness and surgery. I watched him closely at the exhibition and you could tell he was his old self. I mentioned he would be the x factor for the friars this year and you can see he loves playing back with confidence. Both Diallo and Duke have greatly improved over the summer with the Pan am game experience. Should be a fun year as long as they can keep healthy.

Hoya Paranoia still some what in effect, so no real noise on injuries. 3 forwards sat out open practice back at the beginning of october with various lower leg injuries, but we have media day tomorrow so hopefully we'll have an idea going into the first game if anyone is still injured.
